It doesn't download apps automatically it just stops you from downloading apps not from the play store which also you have to give a prompt too

it's the only way to download APK's, I've been downloading all types of apks from a variety of different sites and i never had a problem, no background processes running in the background, no security alert, no malware, and my phone is functioning well with no stutter so i think I'll be fine.

You don't have to disable this setting for your internet security, and if you have an Android version higher than Android O, you don't need to worry about this because if ever an application tries to download viruses, Android will warn you and ask if you want to download "this application"... and use a bit of common sense too, don't give this permission to a random apk that has been downloaded from an untrusted source and don't give it to applications that don't need it either.

This isn't the case, usually there are some apps that aren't on the Google playstore hints the name "Unknown". And the odds of a virus being on a app are slim, usually files are viruses, so I suggest you don't.
