Meryl Streep was deeply in love with the actor John Cazale in the mid-late 1970's. John Cazale discovered in 1977 that he had terminal lung cancer, but continued to act in films. DeNiro was a good friend of Cazale and recommended Cazale to act with him in "The Deer Hunter." The studio found out that Cazale was sick and refused to cast him because they did not want to carry the health insurance should something happen to him while in production. DeNiro stepped in to pay the insurance himself so his friend could act. That is a good man.
