Summer Midge

This pattern comes from Makflies. It is an elegant pattern - a bit unconventional - and it ties up nice and quick.

Start with a brass scud hook (don't use a dark or Nickel hook here) with a Killer Caddis bead behind the eye. Secure it in your vise with a heavy downward slope (you'll reposition it later). Start your thread deep in the hook bend - not behind the bead - and once secure, take open wraps with the black thread up to behind the bead. At this point, you can remove the excess thread back at the hook bend and reposition your hook in the vice to a typical tying position.

I will use a thin UV resin to coat the thread wraps to make the fly more durable. Next, secure white McFlylon on the center, top of the hook right behind the bead. Remove the excess that is hanging over the hook eye and bead. Take wraps of your thread to create a base to be the size of the thorax. Tie in two peacock herls at the back of the McFlylon wing and move your thread to behind the bead. Wrap the peacock herls with touching wraps to behind the bead, creating a nice thorax, secure the herls and remove the excess.

Finally, pull the McFlylon over the top of the bead, securing it right behind the bead. Once secure, cut the balance off about two eye lengths in front of the hook eye. Easy and done.
