What types of gas to use on your family camping stove | Know Before You GO

In this video Ian from GO Outdoors shows you the different types of gas that you can use on your family camping stove.

If you are going camping during the Spring and Summer, Ian recommends using butane gas which comes in the blue bottles, as its a less toxic gas, burns cleaner and is more efficient.

There are two brands of butane gas which are available at GO Outdoor, Calor gas and Camping Gas. If you are only planning to go camping in the UK, Ian would recommend picking Calor gas as its widely available all over the UK in garages and camp sites. Its also much more cost effective than camping gas.

But if you go to Europe, thats when Ian would go for camping gas as this is the only one which is available on the continent. So if you run out, you'll be able to find a stockiest to have it refilled.

If you go camping in the winter, Ian would recommend choosing propane because it works much better at lower temperatures - even below freezing. Which is why you will see propane cylinders outside farm houses and caravans - where it's going to be used all year round

Hi fabulouswalnut. All of the gas cylinders have to be used in conjunction with a regulator which regulates the pressure down to a suitable level for use with an appliance. At GO Outdoors we sell regulators that fit the correct cylinder, so for Propane we sell 37mb regulators and Butane its 29MB regulators.Which is why in the video we recommended for use in winter as propane will vapourise at much lower temperatures than butane.

All you do is check the rating plate on your appliance and check your instruction leaflet or instruction book to see what gas your appliance can use.

In most circumstances many appliances can run satisfactorily on either butane @ 28-30mbar pressure or propane @ 37mbar pressure with no issues whatsoever - a slight yellow tipping may occur at the very top of the appliance flame when the appliance is running on butane but this is no deal breaker, whereas the flame on appliances run on propane will be mainly blue in colour and healthy looking.

If an appliance states PROPANE GAS ONLY in capital letters, then you should heed that warning and stick to the manufacturer recommendations to use propane gas cylinders only - butane gas use may cause poor or indifferent performance.

With many appliances set to run on both butane and propane, there should be no difference in performance as both normally perform well.

The big difference between both gases is operating temperature - butane starts to become poor in performance below 5c whereas propane will work down to -45c, hence why butane is more suited to spring and summer use and propane can be used all year round.
