In case you were wondering; she said that NG is odourless. That’s true but what you are smelling when you do smell NG is the chemical added to it called “mercaptan”. That’s added to indicate that it’s near if there is a leak that can cause harm, etc.

Great video. Thank you for the information. Just a couple of notes, natural gas is not toxic but rather it is an asphixiant. Unlike other hydrocarbon fuels, it is lighter than air (SG~0.58) and so, it rises rapidly when it escapes into air. Flammability range is between 5% and 15% concentration in air; so it does not explode when it is released suddenly. Below 5% it would not ignite. Above 15% it would extinguish a flame and may also cause suffocation. An odourant is often added to it so it's presence can be detected by a person, with a normal sense of smell, when its concentration in air is about 1%, long before it becomes explosive.

Natural gas is not toxic or poisonous at all. It is flammable but not toxic, the reason why people can die from long term exposure is because it can suffocate you by basically pushing the oxygen around it. The headaches people get after a period of exposure isnt from a toxic compound but lack of oxygen that you are getting

You show gas deposits as horizontal beds but in the Permian basin gas deposits are in vertical zones. That’s why directional drilling is used more pay zones can be harvested with one hole.

Great educational video for environmental science students, especially to address the misconception that burning natural gas releases large amounts of methane into the atmosphere.

If we're talking climate change, it should also be noted that methane can be easily made from electricity water and CO2 in a Power-to-gas system (or P2G). P2G has the potential to replace fossil natural gas entirely while using the existing distribution and storage infrastructure dramatically reducing its cost over hydrogen as a replacement high density chemical fuel for applications that require infrequent refueling with large energy demand such as trucking, construction, farming, aircraft, spacecraft, ocean vessels. (basically everything that runs the economy and isnt a personal commuting vehicle or running on an electrifyable track.)

Now the associated gas is also used as fuel gas for the flare, which is used as a pilot gas. The natural from the well contains very high amount H2S which is called saur gas or killer gas

Toxic? Only if it's sour. Or if there is no oxygen to breath.

Omg this literally saved my life I had to do a project and it was due today. I didn’t even start so I’m “sick” today and I’m legit doing this

CH4 is not toxic, it is just like CO2, N2. People might die because of a lack of O2 but not because CH4 is toxic.

To some it up natural gas is very much a crucial resource for industrials and cheap electricity

So the shale gas may be extracted on source rock or we still call the rock as reservoir rock?
