What lens should you buy for video? Well, it depends because there's no such thing as "the best" focal length. Here's a side-by-side comparison of a 24mm and an 85mm lens so you can see the difference. Hope it helps!

This one shot taught me more about cinematography than I would have imagined is possible in a short

Seems like the difference between a romantic scene and a horror/thrillet scene

Usually don’t comment on random reels on YT, but this one is so good. Well done!!

This shows the concept of "compression" very nicely. You could've mentioned that you had to move further away to have the person cover the same area in the shot with 85 mm in case someone new to photography doesn't know. Outside of that this is great :)

This is literally the perfect exploration I needed of the importance of focal lengths. Thank you!

Dude this is so simple and really helpful. You always hear people talk about lenses but I never understood what the difference was. I finally have a better idea why you might want to use a different lens

Well done! It wan an analysis between the fore and background.
Other things to understand will deciding upon a particular focal length.
For close ups, the distortion on the face
For separation of the fore ground from the background.
The depth of field for focus pulling.. Very tough on higher f length with open aperture.
The mood of the storytelling, the most important one.
The space at the location.
The set design, what to show and what not..

This is the first Youtube Shorts I've seen that has actually correct and useful info, well done.

Nice video. But there is so much other stuff to mention, like the artistic differences, but also the warp of a face (e.g. how imho a face looks most natural in 85-100 mm), how bokeh from the 85 mm might be more desirable for one shot but not for others, and mentioning that focal length actually affects depth of field quite significantly, which beginners might not realize immediately. So while everything said in this video was 100% correct, it was also simplifying things way too much (imho) in order to be truly useful for beginners.

And extended, more elaborate video on this topic would be dope!

One of the reasons something like a GH5/GH6 (Micro Four Thirds) can play to their crop factor and achieve nice results without being 2 feet from the subject at times. There's a lot of interesting elements when you combine crop factor and how glass compresses elements in a scene (telephoto compressing the scene down making distant feel closer while wider angle having a massive depth of field creating a different sense of scale with distant objects appearing much smaller).

The best video at showing compression and how it affects the feel of the shot!

This is good quick info but note that these effects are due to the relative distances between camera, subject and background and not the focal length. The focal length changes how you need to frame your shot, which in turn affects the camera/subject/background relationship.

holy shit so much good info in such a short amount of time but not info dense at all. just perfection!

For orbits on film you want more depth so that the audience gets a sense of chaos like there’s too much going on too focus on, also they’re done on tracks so it’s smooth motion

This is so helpful! I’ve been learning a lot since picking up a camera. The best way to learn is to learn from others who know what they are talking about.

Very good explanation of these differences! I now know why the 85 is so popular! I’m ordering one soon.
