I've seen a lot of people taking this as me saying the Sanitized Octolings are also not brainwashed, so I just wanted to clarify, I'm only saying the regular Enemy Octolings aren't brainwashed, the Sanitized Octolings are still brainwashed because Sanitization turns you into a mindless zombie and stuff.

I don't know how many times I mentioned this, but the best part is that the propaganda is absolutely justified when you remember that Inklings lined Octo Valley with booby traps, cut off their coal supply at Bluefin Depot (Which made them have to steal the Zapfish in the first place, ) is actively sabotaging the Salmon Trade too, and the only connection between them and Inklings now have been a racist war vet coot, his grandchildren, and an innocent kid he drafted

My personal head cannon is that Octolings were taught that Inklings were mindless killing machines with the sole purpose of purging the Octolings, but once they hear Calamari Inkantation's godly teamwork and beauty they realize they we arent actually as bad as the Octoling leaders were taught to be and infact were a friendly group of people who fought was due to pure survival instincts.

It's worth noting that the inklings have propaganda of their own, least we forget the sunken scroll claiming that historians say that the inklings won just because they have two extra limbs.

This but with a little bit of "fantasy" narrative thrown in. No the glasses and goggles don't control them, but it's been hinted at all through the game that music has a sort of power over the denizens of the Splatoon world, and afaik, the music in the octarian domes we visit is used to control the octarians there and basically keep them in line. To a single beat of a single song playing for everyone.
The calamari inkantation also has a more "mystical" effect to octarians as well, as it's an awakening for their innate urge to come to the surface, as that urge, that wish, is more or less confirmed to be an integral part of the biology of all the beings in Splatoon that we see (aside from the birds lol)
This is because of the crystals from alterna having absorbed the collective human emotions and wishes to see the surface again, and wave goodbye hints at the calamari inkantation being an old human folk song. Potentially the first actual song the inkfish and co. were able to sing.

I like to head cannon that the No.9 Gang leader being either an octarian or maybe an inkling who really does dislike the living standards for them.

And it should also be mentioned that Callie is HYPNOTIZED, not brainwashed. There's a difference. Hypnotism can only make you do things you're comfortable with, and Callie heard out Octavo and went to the Octarian side on her own. Callie was doing things she was all completely fine with, because if she wasn't okay with it the Hypnoshades wouldn't have worked. There is no brainwashing in the Splatoon series in the sci-fi sense that people think there is. There is propaganda and hypnotism, and puppeteering of dead bodies through sanitization, but not brainwashing.

this situation of music superseding propaganda and convincing people to defect from an authoritarian regime actually has some real life parallels- several north korean defectors have cited south korean k-pop as their inspiration that the regime may have been lying to them, convincing them to eventually defect.
