The thing is, logo style associations change our perceptions. So our preconceptions of new brands are affected by our thoughts on existing similar logos.

For example, while nominally the use of squares suggests stability, most people associate the Microsoft logo with instability. So if another brand chooses a similar arrangement of squares as their logo, they're now primed to perceive instability.

A more extreme example would be the straight lines of a Swastika.

Looking at the problem in this way, it becomes clear that the individual components of a logo actually don't convey as much overall sentiment as we first think, especially nowadays when we're constantly exposed to logos and have a broad range of connotations.
