I have more than one friend or colleague who described themselves previously as a lifelong liberal and Democrat only to wake up one morning to find they had been magically transformed into a right-wing extremist, even though their beliefs had not changed. What had changed was that they now resided slightly to the right of the inflexible religious orthodoxy and ideological lock of their (former) clan, forcing them to keep their heads down and their mouths shut for years. None of them "like" Donald Trump, but many appreciate the opportunity to be liberals again.

I, an Ivy League-educated Latina, became a member of the right-wing by accretion. Then, in September 2023, I sat down and wrote a list of all the “conservative” positions I held. Interestingly, one of the items read, “I am not Jewish, but I don’t believe the leftist narrative about Israelis as oppressors.” Then October 7 occurred, and I have never looked back. (I feel so fortunate that my beloved husband and closest family have made this move with me.)

Everyone on the right is considered "far right." You never hear "far left" used ever even though most "liberals" today are.
