Uzumaki (2000) - Japanese Movie Review

A review of “Uzumaki”, a Japanese horror movie from 2000 that is based on the popular manga by Junji Ito.

This creative, unorthodox film is about a series of townspeople who become increasingly obsessed with, and tormented by, spirals. High school student Kirie Goshima’s first glimpse that something is awry in her small home town comes when her boyfriend’s father begins to film the corkscrew patterns on a snail; he is also in the process of making a video scrap book filled with the images of anything that has a spiral or vortex shape to it. His unusual obsession causes him to abandon his responsibilities at work; he proclaims that the spiral is the highest form of art.

This is one of the most unique movies I’ve ever seen. A must see.

Read the manga and love it, this wasn't bad but alot of things were missing. They did really good casting Kirie Goshima and the song Raven by Do as Infinity was quite nice.

Yes a movie a already saw. Mind blowing it's ideas and what happened. Thank you much. It did something, but was so fun/creepy to watch. Arigato gozaimasu, Sensei, Erik.

I found this film genuinely terrifying. Not that the contents of the film were scary, but there was something so off-putting about the film. The acting was strange, the pacing and editing was strange, the sounds were strange. And there was a very, comic, playful (as you mentioned) aspect to it and the characters, that felt so out of place amongst the death and madness, that it made it even more creepy. As if the characters were indifferent to the people dying around them. It all has this uncanny valley feeling, as if I'm watching a lost video tape.

I love this movie and I like They did not give you the answers. I own this one on Blu-ray and it’s definitely one of my other top favorite J Horror movies.
