I love Jinji Ito's manga series. They do seem to come across even more bizarre in live action film.

This video gets Yamaguchi's death really wrong. He ran into the road because he thought the power of his love for Kirie would stop the car from hitting him. This video frames it like he got hit on purpose.

Also, he was in seventh grade.

This movie cut the story off short so here's the rest of it:


At the end of the book, a bunch tornadoes start appearing and wrecking the town, but for some reason don't destroy the really old row houses. A bunch of rescue teams come in but get trapped, unable to leave the town. Any time anyone moves, it creates a tornado and the only place that is safe is the row houses. People start cramming themselves into the houses, desperate to escape the chaos. More and more people also start turning into snails, and the row houses are immune to that too.

Kirie, her brother mitsuo, and shuichi, try to escape the town. They have to leave mitsuo behind because he turned into a snail. They find out that on the outskirts, time works differently and they come back and it's several years later. People have made the row houses longer to fit more people safely, and they've all extended to form one very long house in the shape of a spiral with dragonfly pond in the middle. They start walking to get to the pond to see if Kirie's parents are still alive. They try to walk into one of the houses, but so many people have crammed into the houses that their bodies have tangled together.

They walk through the alley to find that dragonfly pond has disappeared, and now there's just a giant pit with a staircase on the edges. Suddenly, all of the bodies in the houses get sucked into the hole. Kirie and Shuichi walk down the staircase and one person that didn't make it down grabs shuichi and they both fall in. Kirie makes her way down, and it's this strange place where the floor is made of spiral people and there are a bunch of strange spiral constructions everywhere. She finds shuichi, and they both notice that the farther they walk, the more people have been turned into stone. She finds that her parents are stone. Shuichi tells her that she has to escape, but they agree that they are both too exhausted to try. They link hands, and their arms twist together. They both die.

I love this movie. It's quiet, eerie, dark and disturbing. It made me very sad when The Bicycle Theme played while Shuichi got cursed...

11:40 how did Ichiro (spelling? Sorry..) die when all he did was hit a person with his car? Was there something else in the movie that was left out in this recap which would explain how the driver of the vehicle which smoked some dude, also died? I am the one confuse.
