Except most modern steel is absolutely fine to be simply wiped off. This traditional cleaning method only came about due to the large content of carbon in Japanese steel which made the steel more susceptible to corrosion and rust. And often had to go through a lengthy cleaning process after cutting literally anything. Modern steel is far lower in carbon percentage, and often contains trace amounts of chromium giving modern steel a much more resilient finish. Simply wiping your katana thoroughly nowadays is more than sufficient for healthy blade maintenance.

I love how he constantly keeps making the same videos explaining the same things he’s done already

Unless it's high carbon, shouldn't really matter. Only those really start to rust even indoors in a sheath.

This is my take on it as a blacksmith, a oil wipe down is fine, if it's finished properly it should be sealed pretty well, this doesn't mean you should leave water on the blade. Any oil is fine for cleaning, but I'd use either Linseed oil (the traditional way) or old motor oil.

The reason Katanas in Japan are cleaned that way is because Japan considers any sort of sword to be an illegal weapon and they allow Katanas ONLY because they're classified as traditional artworks. And as you can guess, the blade is made using the Japanese steel which is not all that good and resistant and it can't be made with ANYTHING other than that.

I think what would look cool is making a whole rusted Katana like blade, grip and all that but the putting like half the blade in a big stone

Obviously a blade for display

You shouldn’t use the Uchiko frequently cause it’ll damage the blade.
Wiping a blade is enogh for weeks.

How often should you clean a dull katana that you only take out to look at? If a katana has a painted blade, does it matter if you touch the blade?

I love how these guys teach us how to care of their products unlike others who make them so they don’t last long

Except you do not apply the uchiko ball every time you slice, as it could also damage your blade. You should only do it 1-2 times a year.

Would it work the same for Broadswords?
