"3N, 2N, and...1N." He whispered to himself, as he passed by each machine before stopping in front of the last. There it was, his mecha. Lt.Sablin took a deep breath before climbing into its cockpit. It was an old first generation Legged Exoskeletal Nanoarmor (LEN for short) mecha from the Great patriot war, long obsolete but still carefully cared for and kept in faithful service. It would be enough. It had to be. There would be no going back.
He powered up the engine and heard it sputter and belch, and then suddenly roar to life, shaky but loud and strong. Pushing the controls forward, he began his attack.

All guns firing and hammer smashing, one by one he defeated the newer LENs whose pilots were loyal to the corrupt regime, first with surprise and then with superiour skill or sheer determination. Until suddenly a blast from behind struck him, and he toppled, his LEN badly damaged. A loyalist mecha approached and loomed over him, prepared for the killing blow.
But then, the eyes of Sablins mech began to glow, and on its own, struck out with lightning speed and destroyed the enemy LEN standing above it. Stirring, it shook off the debris covering it, as if it were a lion shaking its mane, and just like a cat made mad, lept forward without warning, flying from foe to foe, crushing each with hammer and metal fist and gun.
Sablin, stirring from the daze of shock and impact, realized his machine was moving on its own, and then watching in a different kind of shock, saw that with each enemy defeated, the LEN seemed to move faster and faster. Until at last there were no more loyalists left to fight. Sablin and his mecha stood there in the square, surrounded by wreckage and silence.

Sablin listened to the Hum of the engine.
It was no longer the ragged puttering of an old and rusted obsolete LEN, he realized. Now, it hummed with new life and renewed vigor.
LEN-1N was young again.
