I feel the LG V40 is being misrepresented here. Let's do some side by side comparisons with another flagship instead. These are phones after all.

Took a couple of pics with the LGv40. Image improved upon the V30, but their software is relying too hard on the AI to produce the best image possible. Hopefully, it can be alleviated with an update that reels this end. The camera has good potential but if an old device can beat you then you have a lot of work to do to catch up.

It could be image stacking thats causing the grain instead of the lens. Apple and samsung do that. And the lg one can do it too with the ported google pixel camera app. Give it a try, its a non root app that doesnt replace your camera. It increases dynamic range, optimises colors and of course image stacks graininess away.

I do PNG as well as raw file only I also never use the built-in camera always a third party they actually still compress the raw file when going through the data logs it's pretty bad

The LG 40 had a substantial phone software update in October 2018. I don't know if this camera had it

it's a PHONE camera. you're going into this comparing it to your pro-level DSLR. this phone, and really *any* phone of today, takes amazing photos for what it is compared to phones of previous years. saying it's "not impressive" is absolutely laughable.

Thanks very much for the detailed review. Most of the LG users use GCAM anyway to get the best results out of the phone. The stock cam software is lacking

Sadly that photographer maybe pro but noob for this video. Lg v40 sky images are way better than iPhone. I hate sharpening and I noticed it between my Samsung note 2 and note 4 (note 2 images were better can you believe?) The points of the photographer may be true but lacks real understanding of the review.. he evaluated only the bad aspects..
edit: some low light images are better on v40 than note 9 so I know what I am saying he is just not making a complete good review.. effort wasted...

I use Huawei P20 Pro before but then I moved to LG V40 ThinQ. Why? Because I am more to video than a still photo. For still photo, P20 pro definitely much better quality than V40. Much much better. But, the video quality is sucks. For V40, the still photo is okay and acceptable but cannot beat the P20 Pro. The video quality on the other hand, V40 is much more advance and produce a very good quality video with many high resolution option and full manual control both on photo and video. Even it can shoot 240 fps in full HD and 60 fps in 4K. So I think it depend with the needs. I still using my V40 until now and loving it.

I don’t think I will be going to your friend for advice on which camera is good or not. His methodology is flawed. I said to a friend once “friends don’t let friends pixel peep” and it seems all of his conclusions are based on pixel peeping.

If the guy truly wanted to make his point, he could simply have printed one of the images he claims wouldn’t look good printed, et voila, we’d see a totally trash picture and we couldn’t deny his claims. The problem is, that wouldn’t happen. If he printed the picture and attempted to show us what his problem with the picture was, he’d have to pull out a loupe and make us stare into it at a tiny portion of the image to see what he is talking about.

Thus, the problem with how he is examining the images. Nobody really looks at pictures like that. If you’re examining a family picture, or a shot of your child building a sand castle with a loupe, you are totally missing the point. Zooming in at the pixel level is exactly how you don’t observe life’s moments.

There were many areas where this guy shows his lack of expertise. He claims that LG blew out the sky through the window in one picture and indeed he shows us an image where the sky was blown out.

But did he *expose* for the sky or did he just shoot in auto mode?

If I was shooting with a camera knowing I was capturing RAW files and I wanted a particular part of an image to be properly exposed, I’d use my knowledge of the exposure triangle and attempt to create a properly exposed image. He obviously didn’t do that. He is definitely misrepresenting the capabilities of the LG camera if he is claiming that there was nothing one could do to get a better image using the software provided.

You’re presenting your boy as a professional but he is showing himself to be just another auto mode shooter.
