Hemifacial Spasm Symptoms and Cure - Before and After Microvascular Decompression - MVD Surgery

This is an update: It's just been over 2 weeks since my MVD surgery for hemifacial spasm and I had my stitches removed at my 2 week follow up appointment. Recovery was a bit rough the first 10 days because I didn't feel like eating which made me feel really weak. And I didn't anticipate how much I'd be sleeping. However the nurse says I'm doing very well considering I just had a craniotomy.

I had almost full facial movement and control for over a week but a couple of days ago I realized the right side of my face is now super weak with facial palsy resulting in an inability to blink or smile on that side. Fortunately this is a temporary condition until swelling reduces and the facial nerve heals. I've been able to eat a bit more lately which has helped me regain strength.

The best part is that there have been absolutely no more spasms and I can definitely feel a huge boost in confidence! I feel excited knowing that I will have my smile back again soon! It's such a simple yet powerful thing! The video on the right was recorded one week after surgery.

Holy shit you healed quickly. I had a braim tumor that sat on a bunch of my cranial nerves for the same exact time period (7 years) which basically paralyzed one side of my face. It's been two years since the surgery and I still haven't healed as quick as you did in two weeks. This gives me hope that once the healing is finally complete, my face won't be permanently disfigured. So happy for you

Just amazing how humans can fix the human body, and how the human body heals. Thank you for the update...and congrats on the surgery and healing.

Thanks for sharing your journey in this video series. It has helped me better hemifacial spasms solutions and helped alleviate some fears I had about the surgery option

I had MVD surgery 16 days ago. I just had staples removed and feel great. The spasms are still occurring but with less frequency. My incision is healing nicely and have zero pain. I stopped all pain meds once I came home from the hospital. I took Tylenol for a few days but am off all meds.
I eat carnivore woe, so I consume eggs, meat, fats, and some dairy, and make my own bone broth. I have been eating this way for a year. I bounced back quickly and I attribute it to my carnivore lifestyle. My experience going in for the surgery was unknown, but I knew that my optimal way of eating had me at an advantage.
I applaud you for having a great experience and that your condition improved. Hopefully, I will have a complete recovery soon.

Congratulations on your surgery I am thrilled for you as I understand what it's like. My Hemi facial spasm( 5 yrs now) is as bad if not worse than yours and my neuro sugeon won't operate. He said they couldn't see the nerves touching but then what is causing this??? I don't know was the answer. Which was very disappointing. So now I have to get Botox injections every three months for the rest of my life. I was told that they more redily do the surgery in the USA. I am in Canada.

What a great series of HFS videos you have prepared for us. Thanks!!! I've been getting botox treatment for the past 11 years, I'll be 70 years old in a few months and I'm now considering the surgery. Due to my age I'm concerned about the impact that the surgery had on your driving, I hope it's not as much of an issue to drive now. I'm on Kaiser and I like the idea of interviewing a few surgeons but I'm not sure Kaiser will allow me to do that. Do you have advice on questions that I should ask the surgeons? I'm certainly going to ask about their specific success rate. Thanks for posting the videos which will help me in the determination of whether to move forward with surgery or not.

Hi! I have a dear friend who has this condition. Unfortunately she is getting all negative advice from family and friends regarding having surgery. So she is scared to do anything. I had her watch your before and after videos, and I believe she is finally encourage! We live in Ohio, otherwise I would take her to your doctor. Do you know if your doc may have fellow doc friends in our general area that he/she would highly recommend? Or, could you give me your doctor's name and I will reach out to him. Either way, I am so happy for you and the success of your surgery! I hope I can help my friend get the same results!!!
