They intentionally did a poor job with the PS classic so they didn’t have to worry about backwards compatibility. Because “nobody” wants them.

I think the ps5 should should let you take any ps1 and ps2 games that you buy and play them. I don't want to limited to only ones in the store as a lot of games like herdy gerdy and whiplash get forgotten about due to age and it would be nice to be able to play them on the ps5.

Financially speaking it doesnt make much sense for Sony to pursue backwards compatibility. It's only a minority of people that actually use the function on the Xbox One. That and the Playstation Classic sold poorly so they are probably looking at that and just thinking it's not worth it at all. Also Microsoft has to make deals with 3rd party companies in order to be able to sell and officially emulate their games. Again that's something Sony just wants to avoid. And the only reason why this works for Nintendo is because their classic IPs are legendary. Nintendo consoles and games are the most sought after products in the retro gaming world, so of course Nintendo sees a lot of success with their online service with NES and SNES games. And on top of all of that they probably want to push Playstation Now subscriptions and that includes PS1, PS2, and PS3 games so... yeah I just dont see Sony ever being interested on doing this unless somehow Microsoft actually starts beating them sales wise and Sony would rolls out backwards compatibility as a counter weight to them but I doubt it will ever get to that point.

It still confuses me to why some people look at backwards compatibility as an issue. I don't see what is wrong with having options to do all in one rather than doing things seperately.

It’s things like this, especially Jim Ryan (with his preorder lie and now his backwards compatibility comments) that’s made me get a series x at launch and wait a year or two for a PS5

I dunno about "somewhat decent", Xbox plays all gens and constantly added new titles, typically lower priced digitally too.

Most of us don't care about ps3 and 2 compatability we can buy a ps2 or 3 for peanuts if i want to play old games. The ls5 is about the next gen not old stuff. That's why I didnt go with mocrosofts console because they are doing anything new just relying on old games to see them through.

They said it won’t “natively” support PS1, PS2 & PS3 games meaning it’s not built into the PS5’s board logic. It could just be semantics but they might still support it through emulation. PS1 & PS2 should basically be a given. PS3 might be more challenging but who knows. Maybe they’ll just keep milking PSnow.

Xbox gave away Saints Row 3 a couple years ago and i played the shit out of it & bought all DLC and soon i'm going to pick up the remaster of it. Definitely a huge bonus to have backwards compatibility

PS4 backwards compatibility is more important going into PS5 than the older titles as of right now especially for people who didn’t experience PS4. There is no excuse for PS1/PS2 digital games not being available especially after purchasing them on PS3. As far as the PS3 games themselves, maybe we could see some type of solution this generation.

It's to do with money and licencing. Around 5% of people actively use backwards compatiblity when it's available it's just not worth their investment.

I guess having 2 Playstations (PS3, PS5) is better than 5 consoles.

Kind of pissed about not have PS5 not playing older gen games. My back compat PS3 is not going to last forever and I dont know if I'm sold on PS now as a good option for me.

I believe it's a technical issue due to the chipset architecture, they moved to x88 chipset on the ps4, the previous consoles ps3, ps2, ps1 wouldn't work natively on ps5 an emulation via ps now is still viable though through streaming I believe

Even some pc titles require extra support by your self just to play then on modern machines

Backwards compatibility is always good, but I can live without it, as long as I can play PS4 games on good on PS5 I'm good.

I think it's a shame and a missed opportunity. Unfortunately, it is probably not possible due to money and resources.
