Hey I am sponsored by Turso, an edge database. I think they are pretty neet. Give them a try for free and if you want you can get a decent amount off (the free tier is the best (better than planetscale or any other))

Someone said never take the offer to stay because you knew already something was not right in the job and you wanted to leave. Like Prime said you're no longer considered for better positions because you might be leaving and in six months you hate the job even more because you didn't like it already.

"They don't value you, they value your work only" This really resonates so hard, thank you.

I literally had a manager at a job say "We got a great deal on you." I started looking for a new job that day

I took my first dev job back 3 years ago knowing I was being under paid (50k usd yearly) but I accepted because I need experience more than anything at the time. Fast forwards to a few months ago and I got a new job at around (107k usd yearly). My counter offer was only 7k more from my first job.

After going through an exhausting year and taking a leading key role with my own initiatives in the company I work for my performance review was great and all of the feedback was exceptional. My salary increase however did not reflect that at all which really felt like I was not appreciated at all. So I put my foot down and said I'll be continuing in my position in this company only if my expected amount was met.
It was hard for me to consider leaving because it's really my first tech job and after 3 years I really enjoy working with my team and how most things are done.
Happy to learn that the silly mistake was corrected and my requested amount has been granted.
I think the moral of the story here is that in companies outside of fang with limited resources it's somebodys job to make sure that every penny is saved. And it's ok. Don't take it personally, just make yourself the person that would be more expensive to lose than to keep and be straight with your expectations.
In case if you read this whole thing, here 🍩. It's a donut. You deserve it bud. Have a great day.

I've never been fired or treated badly for getting a competing offer.

It's all about how you present it, don't make it an aggressive ultimatum, make it something that shows you want to stay but you know you have options if you stop progressing in your career at that company.

I have been at a position where I would say I was underpaid, and I could really feel it in my motivation to give it my all. I did stay there for more than 2 years though, and I did not at all regret that.
Why would I do that? Because it offered a lot of other things that were really valuable in other ways. The primary one was a really nice working enviroment, which on top of just being really good for me at the time also gave me plenty of time and opportunity to improve myself in my field, which together with also being a very impressive place and job description to put on the CV allowed me to make a large jump for the next job I took, which ended well above the normal paygrade for my years of experience.

Unless you are an executive or in an extremely senior position, there is very little reason to play the competing offers game, just leave.

The competing offers game works once per employer. The next time you pull that stunt they're calling your bluff and you basically have to take the competing offer or stagnate

Companies will hate you if you use another offer to get a raise. I'd never stay. They shouldn't make you do that to get a raise. They should have been fair from the beginning.

Remind me of a cousin of mine who got fired for this exact reason, the company he work for is underpaying him, he painted a target on his back with competing offers and then the company trying to acquire his trade secrets before fire him the first chance they get.

Okay but, do you stay in the current low paying job while looking for jobs?
+Income
+Experience
-time to practice
-fatigue and mental drainage from work

Or..

Do you quit
+Time to study
+No pressure/ mental drainage
-no income
-job hunting in the market could take months

This is why you need to work on yourself. Your skills might not go as fast, but your experience really stacks and matters. One day you can say "enough" and go somewhere else.

I still remember when after 1.5 years as a junior engineer I asked for a higher salary and a short time later I suddenly got micro managed like crazy and my boss started becoming really condescending and pissed if there was a minute discrepancy, like I wasn't able to pick up my phone the moment I was called by my boss. I quit literally 5 months later

I personally never accept a counter offer because I think that by switching jobs, I’m able to learn more and advance faster. I’d rather have 5 jobs on my resume, 1 year each than 2 jobs at 2.5 years each. If anything you’re already comfortable 8 or so months in and if you made it past 6 months clearly you can do the job.

Also you don’t just get a competing offer, people make it sound too easy. You apply apply then two months later get an interview then three more rounds then get the offer weeks after that

A good position elsewhere will also value what you bring to the table above all else. You'll be more satisfied with the overall experience and state of you bank account. But that's a matter of your subjectivity. They just need your work.
