Algebra - World Problems - Age Part 1/3

Word problems are challenging, but rewarding once you learn how they're done! Let's take a look at another word problem, this time we'll try one that deals with age:

Problem Text: A man is 21 years older than his son. Five years ago he was 4 times as old as his son. What are their ages now?

I tried myself before see your execution and I started with x as 5 years ago kid's age, with this equation:
x+21 = 4x
x-4x = -21
-3x/-3 = -21/-3
x=7
Then, add 5 to actual kid's age (12), and add other 21 to dad's age (33)

Hello sir, If one wants to apply guess and check method, can you please tell me how to approach in this example: Kim's mom is 47 years old. In 5 years her mother will be 10 years older than twice what Kim's age will be then. How old is Kim now? Needless to say what we need to find is Kim's age now, so her mother will be in 5 years, 52years old, let's guess her age is 14, and then no idea what to do.
