One of my favorite religious ideas I've ever heard went something like:
A type-5 civilization (gods, basically) fell into power-hungry war and internal conflict. The survivors had determined the best course of action was to tweak the laws of reality so 'gods' simply could no longer exist. This resulted in their own deaths and bars any being in our present reality from ever reaching that level again. Essentially, ''The leftover gods baby-proofed reality for us then killed themselves after all their fellow gods died in crazy wars over some bullshit.'
