According to director Shawn Levy on the audio commentary, mentioned in the main movie one, but explained on the extended version of this on the deleted scenes, Scott Adkins, the English actor/martial artist playing the soccer/football player doing that backwards windmill kick (which is in fact a karate kick) 0:21, had many balls thrown at him in order to kick one of them, until he went on that one kick you see in the final film.
