What Was Before the Big Bang? | Prof Sean Carroll

Back in January, I shot a couple a videos with Sean Carroll at the 229th American Astronomical Meeting. Well, at last here is the second video from that day where I asked Sean - "What was before the Big Bang?". This is probably one of the most commonly asked questions I get as an astronomer, so check out what a true expert on the subject thinks about this question in just under 3 minutes!

Which hypothesis do you think is right? A recycling big crunch? Baby universes? Simply a fluctuation from "nothing"?

Thank you so much for this vid, I have seen so much videos regarding this question and prof. Caroll hitsthe nail on the head: we sincerely don't know. I hate when scientists try to use big words and at the end they tell you nothing. It is ok to don't know, we have done unbelievable progress in such a small time, so there is nothing wrong to not have the answer of such a hugely important question.
I don't think I will ever be able te know the answer to that in my lifetime, however i really hope my fellow future humans will be able to figure it out.
Greetings to all of you my earthlings, let's try to enjoy our moment undet the sun.

what a scoop to get Prof. Carroll for a vid!

could an event such as Vacuum Decay serve as a universe "reset" button, at least for the beginning decay location's "visible" universe sphere?

My question is where did the first universe come from????

Paradox perhaps. '1' equals '0' 'and' '0' equals '1', until 'they' 'are' '2'…‘3’, ‘4’, ‘5’, ‘6’ and so on, ever reaching to become both 'yet' neither infinite and or finite…whether between or not, 'nothing' may 'still' 'exist' 'paradoxically'. The universe may be in 'equilibrium' while 'unequal' in a "super-positioned" state and when it 'equalizes' it may 'equally' be 'unequalised'. The “big bang” may be the ‘0th’, ‘1st’ ‘and’ ‘or’ ‘2nd’ time it ‘reverses’ ‘as’ ‘equally’ ‘verse’. So what caused/affected the ‘initial’ cause and or affect?

Well, a state that ‘isn’t’ paradoxical ‘is’ just as paradoxical as a state that ‘is’, and thus there may be at least ‘one’ between. The universe may be in a loop repeating itself for the ‘first’ time, if you know what I mean. It may be that when the universe verges on equalisation a paradoxical singularity of a reverse equalisation that is just as equal as it is unequal ‘starts’ things ‘again’ from the ‘end’…’between’.

Consciousness… it may be in a state as 'and or' between "super-position(s)" like a biological quantum computer of which may or may not use self entanglement as the paradox it may be to see parallel(s)...even while linear. 'Greater' parallel perspective(s) for 'greater' potential and or actual paradoxical awareness. For every potential verse there may be a potential 'reverse' to be equally potential and or actual as contradictory and or complimentary. More will see that disbelief and belief are two halves of a whole.

I've always visualized the universe in my mind as an endless emptiness where, because time is also endless, things happen. Like the big bang.
Phenomena's like the big bang have also probably happened in an endless amount of places and an endless amount of times and will continue for all eternity...
Why? Because infinite time is a very long time for nothing to happen, and even in an eternal universe where nothing exists, infinity is "bigger", making it so something will exists (from nothing).

So for a quantum machanical fluctuation to happen, there has to be a higgs field.. Right? So there was that..

I curse the terms like “big bang, ” “strange” flavors of quarks, etc. Sorry, but they grate on the ears of anyone who cherishes the grace of Greco-Latin scientific naming conventions. I entered a contest long ago sponsored by Sky and Telescope to rename the big bang, but alas, neither my entry, nor or anyone else’s, won.

So if we don’t know what happened before the Big Bang then you can’t say that question doesn’t make sense, because there could’ve been something before the Big Bang

Eternal Expansion sounds convincing, and it sort of explains what happened before the big bang.

how can there be nothing....why is space endless....its a mind fuck just to think about it !!!!

GOD ! was the answer to the big bang. what the big bang is a theory LOL

First off our space in between Our Stars is cold but nothing compared 2 the cold of Intergalactic space when intergalactic space slams into space mixed with gases and stars it bunches up like a fan blowing air through a dirty screen after it bunches up because of the temperature difference like a tornado once it finds a pinhole into the pre Galaxy it begins probably just like you tornado with temperature differences it creates the black hole after billion years of rotating finally all the gases in Stars rotate because of the black hole there is no rotation without the black hole and all pre Galaxy all the stars gases planets only move because of gravity there is no solar systems without the rotation of the Galaxy there's no rotation of the Galaxy without the black hole

Before the big bang maybe there was a black hole collapsing, just a bang after eons of others!,

Romans 1:20 NIV
[20] For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities---his eternal power and divine nature---have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.

A beginning to the universe (aka all there is) doesn't make sense because nothing can come from nothing.

The infinities predicted by general relativity have never been confirmed, nothing in nature (so far) is infinite.

The uncertainties quantum mechanics are a description of human knowledge, so that theory is also limited.

Yet both theories work so well. A better theory might take a long time to develop. Look how far physics as come in the last 400 years, maybe the low hanging fruit has been picked and it only gets harder from here.

Is there possible for existence come from nothing? The answer is YES! Why? Because THERE IS NO LAW IN EMPTINESS. Something comes from nothing is normal happening in emptiness, because there is no law against it. Law of nature is made by something exist, not by empty space, I called it EXISTENCE INSTINCT. In emptiness 0+0 is not equivalent 0, in emptiness 0+0 equivalent ~ (infinity). The main law is "THERE'S NO LAW”, the law of possibility.

Tut tut. I can't believe this channel would stoop to having such a fringe figure discussing such a trivial subject matter... Next time we demand the old lady from number 42 discussing chaffing! ;-)
