Another variation of the 4-4-2 is where one defender, on the side of the ball, moves forward with the attack. That one person then roams the entire front half of the field providing back up to the midfielders. They also do throw-ins and take free kicks and corner kicks. I have set up 4-4-2 teams before, and the key is to pick the players carefully. The central defenders must be quick. The outside defenders must be able to handle the ball well. The outside midfielders must be fast, and the strikers must be skilled dribblers
