Thank you for cautioning people about driftwood when you have a low KH. I follow a Fishtuber that recommends only checking TDS. I found out the hard way that this only works if you understand what your TDS consists of. In my case, very high GH extremely low KH. After losing fish, plants during tank crashs, I listened to a few others and got a better understanding. I am starting to balance with crushed coral. I love driftwood and tannins but acid water NO! Another culprit are those pleco huts. I'm removing those.

My first aquascape was a 20 long and I used spider wood. lol I love bigger chunkier wood, Mopani and Malaysian are my favorites.

I tend to use mopani and spiderwood more as they are easier to find in my local market. But I think Malaysian driftwood is beautiful in its simplicity and naturalness. The scapes that you do are stunning no matter what type of material that you use, you have a wonderful eye. And I wanted to say a special thank you for addressing how having a low KH can affect your PH, it is something that many beginners may not be aware of...I had to learn the hard way myself. As always, thank you for the awesome content!

The very first Aquascape I did was the 15 gallon tall! You guys were the reason that I even set that tank up from watching your channel! I believe the piece of wood I used and it was Malaysian driftwood ! I really really love it now the only thing I have is some locally collected Driftwood, some type of petrified wood and spider wood!!
I think any Aquarium with Driftwood used in it just makes it so natural and beautiful!
Thank you Joanna for sharing this Driftwood guide series! Always the best information around!! Love you bunches and happy Saint Patrick's Day ☘️💝🌿🐟🌿🥰

I like the tannins released in the water. It gives some species of fish a sense of security and a more black water effect

My first driftwood was a piece I found at a garden centre. It is huge in my 10 gallon but I didn’t have the heart to cut it so now two thirds of it stick out of the tank and is covered in moss, pothos and mini orchids. I got lucky and it’s worked out fine but in future I’ll stick to wood I now is safe for my tank.

I got a piece of wood this last weekend from PetSmart labeled as Mopani that I swear is Malaysian. It's a cool little piece.

My first wood was spider wood. I have spider wood in three tanks. When we went to Aquashella I picked up a bonsai tree and a big piece of ghost wood I’ll be using for a future tanks 🤗

Have this in my betta tank. Never have to worry about him tearing anything on it. ❤️

I added a beautiful piece but as you said I had a lot of tannins so I wanted to remove them faster than just letting carbon fix in over the next few months. It was 28 inches long so I decided to cut it in half to make it more manageable to boil. I boiled it over two days till I didn't see much coloration in the water. I boiled it for two hours each day and placed it in my tank. So far it looks like that did the trick. The piece I got had that wave you talked about and looks amazing... I love this wood but it does take time to prep if you don't want tannins. I highly recommend it!

Oh drift wood 😢that stuff is the bane of my existence. I soaked some pieces for months, all winter, and I’m still looking at a tannin filled tank. It’s not that I don’t like tannin or realized that it’s good for the fish, but it gets so bad that it’s like looking through tea. So I put in some purigen and it goes away, but I don’t want to keep that in all the time. And the tannins just come back any how. I personally have gone back to using less wood and more rock. So frustratingly beautiful 😉 I do love your drift wood videos any how.

My first scape I used actual driftwood was from the new river. I found while fishing. Later I learned to be careful due to poisoning your fish. Lesson learned.

Thank you for the information! This is the information that I love to hear about. Rocks, wood and substrate oh my! And plants….and fish….and snails 😂
So far I have only worked with mopani, that’s all we have commercially available in my area, and reptile type wood like cholla that I’m not sure about using in an aquarium 🤷🏼‍♀️. Anyway, I love mopani wood! I just found two huge pieces, one will go in my 40 cube and the other was so cool looking I couldn’t pass it up. They are soaking in the bath tub, they will soak for 6 weeks before I use them in the aquarium.
