Actually, I listened to a podcast that talked about some scientists who tried out an ancient remedy for an illness, and it worked better than many modern medicines. Many of them sound absurd and have people sing Ave Maria and stuff in the middle of the remedy, but people were never dumb.
I forget the exact podcast, but part of it was about how the remedy killed like 99.9% of a bacteria that was responsible for styes. Anyways, it's easy to point to people from the past and think what an idiot and laugh at them, but it's important to remember that modern humans are not fundamentally different and are ancestors were equally capable of genius.
