I would NOT recommend delivering rescue breaths during compressions because the compressions will push the air out rendering the breaths useless. Delivering 30 compressions and stopping for 5 seconds to give 2 rescue breaths (as we do with humans) should work adequately. Especially with smaller animals (as with infants and small children), you want to make sure you deliver only enough air to make the chest rise for one second. If air is forced too hard into the patient it may travel into the stomach causing gastric insuflation. I hope these tips help you save your pet one day!

IMPORTANT TIP:

At 3:13 they are checking for a pulse while still delivering compressions.
In a real animal, if compressions are done correctly, you will feel a pulse when they are being delivered, because when checking for a pulse what you are actually feeling is the blood pumping in a blood vessel, which is what the heart is supposed to do and what chest compressions do when the heart stops beating.

Instead, having someone else check for a pulse while you are doing compressions can tell you if you are doing them correctly, so if you are unsure that you are doing it right, have someone check for pulse while compressing. However if you want to find out if pulse has returned, meaning heart is beating on its own, you need to stop compressions and then check. Do that every 2 minutes of compressions.

Don't own a dog. Don't think I will ever get a dog. But now I know what to do when i see someone else's dog not breathing. Thanks!

Giving CPR to "Another one bites the dust" is a bit disconcerting lol but good tips!

Checking for a pulse during active compressions assesses the quality of the CPR. You have to pause chest compressions to assess for return of spontaneous circulation.

Thank you for the demonstration, I wish I saw this before now, I gave my dying dog CPR totally wrong!! I did it as to what you do to a human! Sadly she passed away!

I'd go with stayin alive rather than another bites the dust for this sort of scenario 🤷

I had a terrible dream where my dog had a heart attack and I did CPR 😭but I was unsure where to compress... so here I am

It's also probably best to stop chest compressions whilst you give rescue breaths? It is in Human patients as you will just push the air straight out before it's had a chance to reach the lungs and it will likely course internal damage as well (albeit they are dead if you're delivering CPR but still). It was useful to find out where to place your hands for K9 CPR, thank you 👍

This is really informative and it’s technically not just dog CPR but cat and small animal CPR. Love it! I think they should change the title to include that she explains that too. 👏

In 2018, I tried CPR on my miniature Dachshund and it's impossible with their body habitus (rib cage and long neck) unfortunately,
I lost my angel, and it was traumatic and to this day I still suffer from flashbacks...
I never got another dog because I feel like it's replacing property and he wasn't property, he was a family member.
For those who was able to save your precious family member, you were very lucky and truly blessed!!!

Thank you for the demonstration on pet CPR. It is so reassuring that I could potentially save my little Chihuahua, should some medical issue arise. I know this video will help lots of pet owners, especially since there is no pet ambulance available.
