“A little bit of G#” just gave me a whole idea… thank you!

It’s also kind of interesting that a first inversion major chord is essentially a minor b6 (no 5) and a minor first inversion chord is a major 6 chord (no 5). It could be viewed as a modal interpretation of the sound, while still retaining the essential characteristics of the tonic chord.

though this is inaccurate because notes on the piano are in 12-TET, not ratio-based like the harmonic series. there will be clashes either way. fretless strings and winds could get you to reduced clashes. Piano will always have clashes because of the tuning system, but our ears have adopted the sonority.

Hmm… I’m familiar with the harmonic series, but I never thought about it as much more than an explanation for why instruments sound different from each other. I vaguely knew it was related to consonance, but I didn’t know it was worth considering when writing music!

Super interesting, I think Ravel considered harmonic series to write Bolero: infact if you look close to the score when the bowed instruments play together, their lines are in the same order as the harmonic series.

I guess my question would be what makes this specific to the first inversion? Woudn't the E note in a root position or 2nd inversion C major still create that G# overtone? Does it have something to do with the E 3rd being played an octave or two lower than the other intervals and thus separated more from them?

You're simply allowing the bass note or lowest note of a chord dictate the harmonic series no matter what triad or any chords whatsoever is played above the bass.
So in essence your So called, first inversion C chord is actually an E chord.
Which constantly implies a new harmonic series everytime the bass moves to another note.

No idea what you’re talking about here. What is a harmonic series?

A bit confusing. He "transformed" C/E to E key and resolved the C/E to F without any comments but "a little bit of G#"??

I think you mean a drop 2. a 1st inversion would be E-G-C
