Canadian military faced ‘'exceptional' situation in determining role amid convoy protest, docs show

Global News has obtained documents revealing top military officials sought legal advice on what role troops could play in clearing trucker convoy protesters in Ottawa in February after the federal government invoked the Emergencies Act.

In the midst of the occupied streets, the honking, the parties, and the security threats, the Canadian military was trying to figure out what it could or should do if the government came calling for help.

Veteran of Oka 1990 here. We were called out in "Aid of the Civil Power" because Mohawks had taken up arms, blocked bridges, and killed a Provincial Police constable. I was there to help restore order, and glad of it. In this case, however, with unarmed civilians protesting peacefully, I'd have refused the order.

These private companies vie for the contracts and fight to keep them by ensuring the required equipment is available to meet the specifications of the contract.
