The Coin Trick That Fooled Houdini - Revealed

Hello everyone. In this video, I teach the coin tick that fooled Houdini. Thomas Nelson Downs was a magician in early 1900s. He was very skilled and known as the 'King of Coins'. Many say that Downs "was the first of the great manipulative magicians and probably the greatest of them all." Good friends with Houdini and they constantly showed each other new tricks and ideas. Downs was known particularly well for a trick called 'Misers Dream.' In this trick, he could seemingly pluck coins out of the air. Although Downs' version uses a metal bucket, the trick that I reveal on this video has a very similar effect. Remember to practice this move in front of a mirror and it will make it much easier to learn.

Stay magical,

Oscar

People need to realize magic 100 years ago today was completely different. Magicians didn’t have hundreds of thousands of books/videos to learn from. Even though many of us don’t practice magic that much we can get a good idea because of what we learn from hours of watching videos. It was easier to fool a magician 100 years ago with what we call a “simple” trick today

It's not about knowing how it's done
It's about being able to do it smoothly and make the amazing illusion of the coins vanishing

Your coin tricks are excellent! The first time I did it and showed it to my mom and she thought I was teleporting the coin. The first time you were doing it I thought it was teleporting, too! I Watched all of your pen magic videos it was excellent, too.And You fooled me on all of your coin videos and pen videos. I watched some of your other videos and they’re were also excellent. The one that you use the paper money and the cards you fooled me and the first time I did it I fooled my mom. You fooled me when I was looking at all those videos. The tricks are simple but it looks hard. The first time I saw it it looked so hard but when I did it it wasn’t too hard. I liked all of it. And when you explain it you explain it well. I bet the other ones are good The one that you change the cards color fooled me a lot. Your tricks are astonishing but simple. I didn’t watch it all, but the first time I watched your video it was excellent and you fooled my dad. Thank you for posting the video’s. My family liked them very much!!! Excellent Job!👍😊👏👏♥️

This looks like the kind of trick that needs to be practiced a LOT to eliminate wasted motion and appear completely natural to fool the audience. There were a couple of times where his hand motions gave away that there was something still in it. (Shaking the hand as if weighing something, and the slow movement of his thumb that looked like it was moving something into position.) Also, the entire sequence is slow. But we wouldn't have a named routine that has been used for years by magicians if the trick didn't work. So just because the camera angle was unforgiving and Oscar stumbled a bit on the execution that sharp eyes caught the tells doesn't mean the trick is a bad trick. This trick mainly runs on the brains desire to follow a moving object. Coin disappears, coin appears. Normal people's eyes aren't looking at the empty hand anymore.

Fill the emptiness with patter, make the moves smoother and faster, which we can assume Downs was very, very smooth and you have one very convincing trick in a routine.

Now If only I could find a tutorial for a one-handed disappearing coin. The one where the magician is holding a coin between thumb and finger. Coin vanishes. The magician opens fingers and turns hand around. The only one-handed disappearing coin trick I know won't work spreading the fingers.

All of y'all saying y'all knew this clearly don't know that magic and illusions were different 100 years ago when tricks like these were first being introduced.
