I have heard that adding a very small amount of sand (or anything gritty) to the socket between the drill and fire board help create the friction faster. What are your thoughts on this?

In very wet weather, For the wood,  I look for a standing tree that's not too big around, and that's completely dead.   Pine works very well.  I've started fires in the rain, and in the snow using dead pine.

The bird nest can be the hardest part of a friction fire in extremely wet weather, but you can always find dry components, if you know where to look.

Hi. I live in the small state of Rhode Island. We live on 3 acres that make up mostly of Maple, Oak and Pine. Are any of these woods effective as a bow drill hearth board or spindle? Thank you!

The method is easy, selection of material is the hard part! You should make a video of selecting the right wood

I'm definitely going to try this.

what fire starting method should I rely on? or are you saying I shouldn't rely just on one method of fire starting?

I built my first bow drill set, however I have a problem... The handle wants to fire instead of the fire board.  What to do?
