Great job. Making fire with a hand drill is extremely difficult

Sean, thank you for making this video. So now you have one of my first made arrows; I want to send you one of my recent arrows. Also, let me know when you are in need of more fire materials. Keep up the great work!

Nice little vid, and yes it is very difficult.  Those are what Native's in Southern California used for their kits.  I have tried unsuccessfully  to use this method.

GREAT JOB!!! Question for you... do you have any book recommendations for someone who is considering primitive archery? Everything from making to using to history?

Congratulations !  and you got it on video to boot :o)   i love the look on your face; says everything.

You did a much smoother job than my first hand drill fire.  That was a while ago and i have made a few more since then so i thought i would through my two cents worth in just for shits and giggles... if there's something that helps, awesome... if not, no worries.

1. sit down.  unless you are using a mouth socket, you should sit with one foot on the board seeming to be the best.   i do it with my legs straight a lot of times and it works fine.. my hips don't always want me to have my foot on the board.. not as flexible as i used to be :o)

2. it looks like youre leaving your drill in the hole while you are blowing on the coal... lift it just a little if you do so it is not resting in the coal dust... it will suck heat out like crazy.

3. learn how to 'float' so you can warm everything up before the fast, power strokes... you basically rock your hands back and forth but stay at the top with less push and speed than you use later.  i can get a good coal just floating with mullein and cedar.

4. practice getting smooth, full-hand length strokes... every time the stick stops, no matter how short a time, it cools down.  so every time it changes direction, it stops.
finger tip to heel of hand and repeat.  it is very important.

5. goes with the last one.. because your strokes are short, and because you are kneeling rather than sitting, you are 'bottoming out' sooner than you should.  so you have to stop and reset at the top... so, sit, use longer strokes, And work on your change over from the bottom back to the top... do that quickly and efficiently... you are losing a lot of heat there during that time.

6. and one last unsolicited piece of something to ponder... i use i nice square of birch bark which is like leather but better... that piece if buckskin looks too nice to burn but no big harm done and it would look cool with little burns on it... good leathery bark would do a nice job though and you may like how it works... use a flat piece that is about a 1/4 inch thick and flexible.  and i also put my little nest of tinder right under my fire board so the coal ends up dead center... i flatten it out a little bit with the fire board first and then just lay the board on top... i use a little tool like a tongue depressor.. usually just a flat sliver of wood with a v end that i carefully lay on the coal and lift the board away without disturbing the coal and then gently fold the nest around the coal and off you go !

thanks for sharing your video.. i get just as much out of seeing someone else succeed as i did when i finally got fire with the hand drill ... very special stuff.

all good medicine

you can get a lot closer on one knee too... better than kneeling, where your knees get in the way.  your hands should almost touch the board at the bottom.  on one knee is similar to the position you use when you do fire with the bow and drill.

There's something about you (other than just the hat and setting) that screams "Oregonian!" So I live in Portland and have inlaws all over in Albany and Salem. What natural materials from this area would you recommend for a friction fire drill and board? I've used various randoms woods I've found for a fire drill and board, but haven't been very successful.

Nice video, when you take your oldest boy to the park, play on the monkey bars with him, put some calluses on them palms, and some muscles in them areas you need.

great vids! I'm on a journey to learn many of the primitive skills you display in your vids. can't help but notice that you seem to be interested, as am I, in the artifacts found at ancient sights. I've been trying to find more info on artifacts, pics, tech data etc., of like the spirit cave and love lock mummy's, but, all info seems to pertain to the mummy's themselves, and not the things found with them. do you have a resorse  that you use to learn things like the info on utzi's arrows and such. p.s. keep making these vids!
