It can be frustrating not knowing what something is used for. Hopefully this short video helps explain these two file types associated with Gopros.

Kdenlive will use the LRV file as a proxy file for the MP4 file of the same name. No need to change the LRV to mp4 at all. Set it up to it once and it will do it by default ever time. Works great on my older PC.

A question I have is why I only have LRV video files and no MP4 high res version too? I saw it could be because of battery being low, but could you also clarify why that is and anything I could do in the future to keep both MP4 and LRV versions for each video? I have 256 gb on a sd card that is good with gopro 8, and still had 6 hours of room when making my videos, so the only thing I can think that made it only provide low res video was battery life, even though some videos were taken later at full battery.

So shortly, yes you can delete them. Thanks!

Oh, I thought I hit gold finding this video and was going to get the answer to my issue damn it! When I download my video's using my brand new Hero 12 onto my laptop and then attempt to download them into my Adobe Premier for editing I continue to receive the following message and think it has something to do with LRV? "this type of file is not supported, or the required codec is not installed". Not sure what I'm missing, thanks anyone!

Well edited and done there..
Shot and fast explanation. What your missing is something more then a Gopro clip in the start of the video and aim on yourself to catch the watchers with a short logo or introduction blur with a transparent face to make people see that there actually someone talking in the background. Maybe you dont like being in the clips or something, Usually feels really weird, but for someone that dont know you it will most of the time give a good impression on how you interact with the people watching :)
I hope this helps you and Ill subscribe on you so we hope some more do. Like the voice and accent, good start and no awkward "hello guys" or "hello youtube".

Keep posting and contact me if you feel like talking about the youtube stuff.

So what I'm hearing is because I'm not broke and bought a 8 core 16 threads and dual bandwidth I can junk the lrv files

Thanks for the explanation!.... but wish I could find out how they could NOT be recorded in the first place.... waste of space and extra clutter to me!

On my Hero9, I get LRV files I can use for proxy files when I record 1080p/60fps and 4K/30fps, but not 4K/60fps. Do the hero10 and/or hero11 generate LRV files when recording 4K/60fps? This setting is when they would be most useful.

Thank you for your Videos, It sold my problem. Question: How can I prevent my Gopro 9 black from record GX files. I had no issues with GH files.
