One of their professional skills is 'not getting bit or clawed'. A rotting corpse is absolutely easier to pin down then a terrified dog or cat.

I never thought of it but yeah surgeons and doctors would be the ones treating first patients until we realized what we were dealing with

That last point is the biggest reason. All doctors that focus on human health, like gps, surgeons, all pathologists, epidemiologists, they would be the 1st to die because they are on the front lines dealing with patients and the disease up close and personal.

THIS this is why im gonna be pursuing Veterinary medicine, not because of pay, mostly about the animals, but because its basicaly just zombie apocalypse training

I always wanted there to be in some zombie movie/show that one weird history professor who survives by having a suit of medieval armor that none of the zombies can bite through, so he just lives his life wearing a suit of armor and is fine

Also, narratively speaking, it’s more interesting to have someone who’s not perfectly tailored to the situation, someone who might be able to do it rather than someone who should be able to do it

Plus, country vets.
If you have a practice or home in the country, you are more isolated and probably set up to last a while without going into town. Might have a generator, well, wood stove, a pantry stocked up with canned goods- that kind of thing

Veterinarians generally became vets because they love animals and are caring people, which is unfortunately why their rates of suicide are so high, whereas human surgeons statistically actually test very strongly for psychopathy, and tend to be cold and emotionless. Depending upon just how much the world has gone to sh!t in a zombie apocalypse situation, the psychopathic surgeons are probably more likely to be still alive _BUT_ they probably wouldn’t help anyone in trouble if they’re not getting paid. So the few veterinarians who managed to survive are far more likely to help others as they are generally just more altruistic and empathetic people than surgeons…I’ve put too much thought into this, haven’t I! 😂

Anyone who’s watched a Vet show knows how little equipment is made for animals. Like they get so creative sometimes it’s unreal.

That last point is fair as hell though. Most doctors would probably be dead cause of their location in an outbreak

Edit: Holy hell, thank you for the 10k likes. This has gotta be my most popular comment yet, lol

That point about the broad skillet is super on point though. There not likely to be experts but medicine is so specialized that you ask a brain surgeon to apply a turnakit he's gonna be as good at it as any other random. Give me an EMS guy or a Vet over a surgeon in an emergency any day of the week

I've seen this quote pop up in multiple places and every time I imagine a vet dodging animal and zombie bites like they are a character from a King Fu flick.

Once had a friend comment that if he ever found/met a wounded alien he'd bring them/it to the vets rather than a hospital 'cause they are more used to unusual/differing body layouts

So good reflexes, jack of all trades, creative and resourceful, carries (some of) their own tools, and much more likely to still be human than a doctor?
Yup. Veterinarian it is.

Yeah, doctors would be right in the middle of the mess.

Its also why the only time there is a human doctor its like a retired combat medic

the last point just seems the most obvious.. "not at the human hospital during the initial outbreak"

It really does make so much sense. The early hours/days of the outbreak would be chaotic and filled with misinformation, and doctors would be the closest of any profession to the infected.

My money would be on livestock vets specifically. Not only are they used to a VAST variation of issues and species, but they're also used to thinking on the spot and use the environment they're in to get things done in the easiest, safest and quickest way (without going too quickly as that often leads to mistakes or the inability to stop in time leading to unnecessary injuries or stress on either patient or humans trying to help)
Plus, I've never met a livestock vet who didn't have at least 5 types of medicine in their car at all times, just in case they suddenly get a call about some emergency and they're the one closest to the location. (They also usually have at least 3 types of gloves, boxes of scalpels and other items that may be useful in a zombie apocalypse)

Also, in Medical Anthropology, the concept of practicing "veterinary medicine" on humans is about meeting people where they are culturally to provide treatment. Vets are used to figuring out what is wrong with a patient and how to fix it without the patient even speaking the same language. In a post apocalyptic situation, doctors still adhering to preconceived standards and ideas about medical care will be less adaptable than a vet
