I will never forget my first economics lesson.

The tutor said there is one fundamental fact we need to understand in economics.

Creating wealth is far from easy. What is all too often touted as wealth creation is nothing of the sort. It is merely the transfer of wealth from someone or a group to another individual or a group.

A win usually means a loss somewhere else, even if the 'somewhere else' is not initially evident.

Everything else is an opinion, and that the two most respected economists were Keynes and Friedman and they hated each other's guts and accused each other as being deluded!

He then went on to say that what he had said, although with merit, it was a bit of an oversimplification.

Gary can you put some numbers on this, obviously assets are owned disproportionately by the rich but how much do the rich have now compared to the 1970s or 1950s it would be good to see how the pieces of the pie are distributed!

Gary, I consider myself someone who is for the most part, wholly-uneducated and at times woefully ignorant about the economy, admittedly because I've been fortunate enough that throughout my life, my family has had enough income to shield us from the worst of the cost-of-living crisis. I want to thank you about the moment of clarity that I gained from you when you mentioned that money is not real assets, but instead defines who has access to the real assets, the houses, the food, the resources etc. Even graduating from Cambridge (though not for anything Econ related), I'm enough of a dumbass that the thought never crossed my mind.
Your presentation is clear and to the point, and it's never been more necessary. Thanks for educating me, and I hope your message eventually reaches the ears that it needs to reach in our government. We're genuinely fucked otherwise.

An uphill struggle Gary, I've got working class friends who don't believe in capital gains tax, because 'tax was already paid before the asset was bought'. And don't seem to care about the unearned profit made, even though they are paying tax on their earned income!!!

One big problem is that a lot of poor people and middle class people are against taxes because they think they might become rich one day and then be affected by these taxes. When actually statistically it's very clear that the vast majority of these people won't ever become rich. So basically they're screwing themselves over almost surely for something that might happen at a tiny chance. It's quite tragic to see.

honestly the rich aren’t feeling the damage at all i feel like we are running out of time, like everywhere is either shut or rundown, children homelessness is rising, austerity has resulted redistribution to the wealthiest which you say so beautifully gary. what can we do as civilians, working class people?
