It’s simple: People don’t have a problem with women taking the pivotal role in a movie. They have a problem with bad writing. Ellen Ripley, Sarah Connor & Vi etc. are beloved female characters because they’re relatable, flawed & compelling not just because they’re strong.
Edit: (thus far) it sucks. I have a sneaking suspicion that all criticism of the show’s plot and characters will be deflected by calling people sexists & bigots 🧐
Edit 2: That was an understatement. Acolyte is absolutely awful
Edit 3: Episode 4… how is it getting even worse 😂
Edit 4: Well it’s over. One of the worst shows I’ve ever seen. It completes the trinity of trash with Velma & She-Hulk. Just another nail in Star Wars’ coffin.

Disney Star Wars: we’re finally putting women in Star Wars as main characters!
Leia and Padme:
*am I a joke to you?*

I'll never forget that they robbed us of Finn's story. A stormtrooper becoming a Jedi.

The ratio for the acolyte tells me that Star wars fans have finally accepted Kylo Rens words
Let the past die.

Luke, who essentially becomes the most powerful user of the force in star wars history, was being trained by one of if not THE best teachers ever (Yoda), and he still lost his first fight with Vader. He then had to go back and spend MONTHS training even more. Ray who finds out she is a Jedi like a few weeks ago with zero training whatsoever can defeat Kylo Ren who has been training his whole life? Already there are zero stakes, she easily defeats the big villain without going through any hardship or development. Compare this to Luke, who with the power and training mentioned, gets his hand cut off in his first fight against Vader who was going easy on him the whole time. Horrible horrible horrible writing.

In defence of The Boys, they were directly taking the piss out of Marvel with their "girls get it done" running joke.

I don't have any hope for Star Wars anymore, Darth Katleen really killed it

"im gonna make a movie about a woman being a main character!"
>The female character in question is OP times 9000, has little to no struggles, personality is flatter than my floor

"Why is noone liking my movie?"

People don’t hate the “girl boss” characters because they’re women it’s because they’re poorly written

The Japanese have had powerful female roles in anime and film but the only difference is they don’t make it propaganda

The whole idea of politics in movies is to have a shield to deflect against legitimate criticism. They want to say things like “the fans are racist and sexist” rather than saying “we made a bad script”

It's not just women, but men too. I hate this 'every guy is an incompetent pushover' trope with silly personalities who are okay with being mildly antagonized. I want the assertive rugged men back in movies

I’m glad they’re finally starting to realize that unearned power and confidence doesn’t resonate with an audience, but the experience and journey that the characters took to develop. It’s OK to put women through tough trials and tribulations for character development, that is not misogyny.👍💯

No, unfortunately Disney will not stop doing it. They know everyone hates it but they dont care. When they announced Rey was coming back, that was the confirmation their politics outweigh common sense. Because that was not a thing in the pipeline they had to burn off, that was a decision moving forward knowing girlboss films fail and not caring.

Finn would have been a much better lead than Rey. A stormtrooper turned Jedi, with proper struggles with PTSD and trying to keep up with Jedi teachings despite his emotional turmoil.

Yoda: Finn, the chosen one you are.
Finn: Really? You mean it? Not somebody else?!
Yoda: No, in yourself believe.
Disney: Hey, wait, just because he was a child soldier and as FN-2187 not even had a name, that does not mean he is relatable zero-to-hero material...
Finn: I am not? Why?!
Disney: Put a chick in it and make her lame. That's what audiences expect from us. But, Finn, we will keep you around as a laughing stock.
Finn: ... I am not coming back for any of your Plus shit...
Disney: Fine. We will find another minority to exploit and fake-care about.

How to write a good female character:
step 1: write a good character
step 2: make character female

The most unbelievable thing to me is how these big movie companies have the mindset of, “don’t listen to what the audience likes, we decide what you like”, which completely baffles me on how that’s an effective sales strategy .
