Alright how to stop grinding your teeth at night.
Around 8-9 months ago I went to the dentist for a regular cleaning.
And I'll never forget the dental hygienist, because I really learned a lot from her that day. Her name was mary rose.
As she was polishing and cleaning my teeth, she asked me "Do you grind your teeth at night?"
I said, "I'm not sure, but I probably do."
Then she said, "Do you ever wake up with headaches?"
I said, "Yes."
She said, "Yeah that's from clenching your jaw in your sleep. It puts pressure on your head and creates headaches."
I said "You know, I catch myself clenching my jaw during the day sometimes."
She said, "If you're clenching your jaw during the day, you're definitely grinding your teeth at night."
Then she said it's from anxiety.
And I was thankful for what I just learned.
If I could stop clenching my jaw during the day, I would stop grinding my teeth at night.
I was just in the habit of bearing down and clenching my jaw, and the habit was leaking into my sleep.
So if I could break the habit clenching my jaw during the day, I would stop grinding my teeth damaging them every night.
So what I started to do, throughout the day if I noticed my jaw was clenched, I would first relax my jaw and shoulders, then I would take 5-6 slow, deep breaths.
And this alone gave me a huge improvement. Before this I was waking up with a headache around 4 times a week, this alone brought it down to 2.
I was able to cut it down even more when I added a breathing exercise to by bedtime routine.
About 30 minutes before going to sleep, I would do the 4-8 breathing exercise for about 10 minutes.
The way you do it is you breathe in for 4 seconds, and out for 8 seconds. This calms your body down, and gets your nervous system ready for sleep. I have a video on it, I'll put a link down below.
Doing this before bed, I was to down to just one night per week of grinding my teeth and waking up with a headache.
Over the next few weeks, I tried to become aware of why some nights I grinded my teeth, but not others.
And what I found out was if I had a panic attack during the day, I would grind my teeth at night. It didn't matter how relaxed I got before bed. If at any point during the day I let myself go into full panic, even just for a few seconds, I would grind my teeth at night.
By this point I had come a long way in my anxiety journey. A few months before this, I was having 5-10 panic attacks a day. Being down to 1 per week felt amazing, but even one per week was causing problems. I'd get poor sleep, wake up with headaches, feel irritable, and it was a slippery slope back to high anxiety.
That was until I learned how to take control of my physiology and my emotions by doing a breathing exercise 3 times per day.
I would do it first thing in the morning. After lunch, and after the work day. I would even do in the car to and from work.
And after a few weeks of making this a daily practice, I noticed that I couldn't remember the last time I felt panic.
And as the weeks and months went by, I never woke up with a headache. And I stopped grinding my teeth.
And it came with a million other benefits as well like clearheadedness, and inner balance.
