This is not unpopular. This is good Senior Developer advice for other Seniors and Tech Leads. You are very popular with me, Mr Brandow Sir! On the other hand, it may be terrible advice for the vast majority of Junior devs. (like, for example, when they want to re-implement cryptographic algorithms and they are not Senior devs in that particular specialty)

Attempting to reinvent trains is likely to fail miserably, much like Tesla's endeavors. It frustrates me to see how casually Apple talks about innovation, using it merely as a buzzword without delivering meaningful advancements. Often, innovators try to reinvent the wheel where it's unnecessary or even detrimental to human progress. With finite time and resources, it's crucial to allocate them wisely.That is my point of view on this issue.

You have to have the time and knowledge to invent a new wheel. Most of us don't have it, and using existing wheels is the only way to do our job (and to keep it) in a professional environment.
In my personal side projects, I like to think about improvements to existing stuff and learn by improving it, because I have almost infinite time to learn and to invent and nobody's angry if I drop it without any presentable results.
