2024 Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer Revealed

The VW ID.7 Tourer marks Volkswagen's initial venture into the electric station wagon category, positioning itself alongside the company's traditional, gas-powered wagons like the Golf Variant, Passat Variant, and Arteon Shooting Brake.

Despite what one might expect, the dimensions of the ID.7 Tourer mirror those of its sedan counterpart, maintaining the same length, width, height, and wheelbase. This similarity in size does not compromise its utility, however. Thanks to a redesigned rear section, the cargo space is generous. With the back seats up, it offers 605 liters (21.3 cubic feet) of space, acting more like a hatchback or liftback due to its electric tailgate. If you lower the back seats, the space expands significantly to 1,714 liters (60.5 cubic feet).

The design of the ID.7 Tourer doesn't venture far from the expected, featuring a longer roof and a more substantial rear end, akin to the standard ID.7. A standout feature is the optional panoramic sunroof, which incorporates a special polymer-dispersed liquid crystal layer, allowing the roof to switch between transparent and opaque with a simple button press on the ceiling. This innovative feature, once reserved for high-end cars, is now making its way to more widely accessible models.

Powering the ID.7 Tourer is a rear-mounted electric motor identical to the one in the liftback version, delivering 282 horsepower and 402 pound-feet of torque. At launch, the Pro model will be available with a 77 kWh battery, and a Pro S version with an 86 kWh battery is set to follow, also planned for the hatchback version. With the larger battery, Volkswagen estimates the wagon can travel up to 426 miles (685 kilometers) according to the WLTP cycle before needing a recharge.

Charging capabilities vary with the battery size. The standard battery supports up to 175 kW charging, while the larger one can accommodate up to 200 kW, allowing for a rapid charge from 10% to 80% in just about 30 minutes. Like all electric vehicles, the actual range can be affected by various factors, including wheel size, which ranges from 19 to 21 inches for this model.

The ID.7 Tourer will be assembled in Volkswagen's Emden factory in Germany, the same location where the standard ID.7 and the ID.4 are produced. However, Volkswagen has decided not to introduce the Tourer to the U.S. market. North American customers can look forward to the liftback version arriving in the latter half of 2024.

Thanks but the massive screen blocks visibility. I wish these protuding screens could be banned. I like the implementation of screens in cars like the new Lexus LBX and Subaru Foresters
