NEW VW ID7 vs My TESLA Model S! Range, Power, Practicality Comparison

The 2024 Volkswagen ID.7 is billed as a new premium electric car to rival the Tesla Model 3 and BMW i4. Except it isn't, because it's bigger than both of them - and more closely aligned with the Tesla Model S. So, can it go beyond what's expected and beat Tesla's larger five-door at its own game? Sam Sheehan finds out, before deciding whether to make the switch...

The ID.7 we're using is a press car supplied by Volkswagen at its UK launch event in Milton Keynes. The Tesla we're using has been Sam's cinch company car for two years. The new ID.7 costs from £51,550, while a used Model S can be had from £21,900 on cinch (at the time of writing).

The ID.7 uses a 77kWh (usable) battery, and has a claimed 384-mile range. Sam's Model S uses a 72.6kWh (usable) battery, and has a real-world range of 250 miles. Both cars in this test are single-motor, rear-wheel drive models, with five doors and five seats.

All journalist: We don't like the touch sensitive sliders
People that actually drive ID-cars: What are they talking about? Super easy once you get the hang of it. Now every car with buttons feel "old"
I admit in the beginning it took some adapting, but when you know how to use they work great, much faster and quieter.
So thank you VW, for listening to the real customers feedback.
Eagerly looking forward to the touring model...the EV-model I'm awaiting for the last 10 years, still holding on to my old trusty Saab Estate for the boot space.

The door handles of the ID.7 are great! Know them from former AUDI models, really nice design and functionality.
Wish the auto makers would invite testers like cinch to test their prototypes and then react to their complaints. Since the beginning of e-car-production of VW everyone is complaining about fiddly controls, touch sliders for audio etc. There seem to be some real touch and high gloss lovers at VW. One rotary control for volume should be there, period. And no glossy finish anywhere.
Besides that, ID.7 is more than one could expect from VW! They seem to go for customer wishes & complaints more than Tesla at the moment.

Now that the voice control system works you don’t need to use the sliders. Rest of the car looks really good. Also you showed the range of the VW, in not good conditions, but then didn’t mention what the Model S did at the same time.

Surely the death of the Model S: $30, 000 cheaper, more range, better interior. No brainer

A sunroof that doesn't open? Whomever thought that was a good idea was sadly mistaken. Don't think we didn't notice. I talking to you Tesla.
The ID-7 is no match for the acceleration of the Model S.

What the ID-7 does better than any other of its competitors is taller seats. The seating in every EV sits very low to the floor board due to the battery placement. The ID-7 is on of if not the only EV allows for tall more comfortable seat so you knee won't be pointed up towards the ceiling.

In addition, the seats are nicely styled (maybe could do with a bit more quilting), but the polarizing turquoise piping needs to be rethought.
@12:00 I would like to see the "always on" icons on a transparent background. This is yet another place where Tesla excels.

Not only with more computing power, but in its presentation with more 3- dimensional graphics as well. It has not bezels so the display goes all the way to the edged of the screen. The HUD could be a bit more saturated. Although the ID-7 is sized equivalent to the Model S, just keep in mind that the true competitor to the ID-7 is the Tesla Model 3, when comparing price.

Tesla need to respond with a new Model S quickly because this looks like a good deal in comparison. I wonder how the values of VWs ID cars and Teslas will hold.

I think, with ID7, we’re going to have to take that top range figure as ‘mostly unachievable’ (384)!

Think 300. But I’d personally wait on larger ‘86 battery, and spec it on 19s… maximises range, though probably at around £60k. But you should get about 350-375 out of that one, which is a bit of a game changer! Great effort VW.
