Espalier trees are trained to grow flat against a wall or fence. They have a very artistic form and structure. Maintaining that form is important in the long-term health and productivity of the tree.

...and that's why I buy apples from your trees. Saves me from all that pruning. You are a master! Great video! Thanks for sharing your expertise.

Beautiful tree. I recently read about summer pruning that encourages the spurs to grow downward. Any thought on that?

My little espalier apple was in the process of ripening several nice little apples when the neighborhood black bear pruned the whole thing. Not too bright of me planting it in that spot. I was only thinking to protect it from the deer.

Helpful video. Thank you. What are your thoughts on pleaching, espalier fruit trees? We are redoing our yard. My wife loves espalier fruit trees. I’d like to used pleached trees to create more privacy along a fence line. Hopefully we can accomplish both.

When pruning the water sprouts, do you remove it completely off the branch or prune to a certain number of nodes?

My apples and pear espalier are in their first spring/summer after planting them in late winter. The first tier is growing well. Its now mid summer. I have some branch growth coming off the two trained laterals and some off the central leader. Should I be summer pruning in the first year on my first tier laterals? Is mid summer too late for that? I have one pear which has produced a few laterals off the central leader at a tier two height. Should I train those now or is it best to cut the central leader back in winter to start the next tier from fresh? Thanks

Why have you pruned it in the winter, shouldn't this have been done in the summer. Winter pruning just promotes the water shoots.
