Pruning your Trees in 3 Unique Ways!

Have you ever heard of these 3 pruning techniques? I recently stopped by the Hagley Museum and was given a tour of their gardens. In one of them, they had trees pruned in these unique ways. These methods take some practice to master, but they can increase interest or function in your garden, particularly with fruit trees and other small flowering trees.

Espalier pruning involves training a tree to grow in two dimensions, usually along a wall or fence. It is often used in tight spaces or along the perimeter of a garden. The step-over pruning technique is often used to line paths, and trains trees to grow low to the grow and horizontally along a structure. Lastly, Quenouille pruning involves shaping a tree into a conical shape with main layers of branches that are usually trained with a weight or are tied to the ground.

We bought an antique house & the 90yo apple tree by the back door had been trained to an umbrella shape with all the fruit within easy reach.
Later we planted a climbing rose near a fence. It refused the fence, grew only 1 stem 15' tall, latched itself to the apple tree, & spread its tiny pink roses from there.
I believe we had the only rose apple umbrella tree in the world.

I saw step over style at Mt. Vernon's gardens and I thought it was really cool.

This is information i wish the older generations would have done. And taught. I had to learn this myself. Also if you want shorter bushier plants by cutting them while they are young.

Awesome I just learned about Scrogs with cannabis. I am sold. I've got growing fever and a lame pear tree that would be perfect for this. Ty.

These are super creative ideas but it's important to remember that if you're growing a tree along a structure meant to support its weight, it wont divert as many resources to strengthen that supported area. Once a structure is assisting a tree for long enough, it becomes part of the tree!

I use plastic water bottles to shape my trees. I tie them to a branch and fill them with enough water to weight them enough to get the angle of the branch I want.

I just need help with the pruning basics. I live where there are a bunch of mature fruit trees with various issues. Any recommendations on the basics?
