The U.S. is in the ninth round of talks with the Taliban with a heightened expectation that an interim deal is going to be reached. What will the agreement between them be, what will the withdrawal timeline of troops be, will there be a residual counter-terrorism force, what about the Afghan Government and other groups being included in a dialogue that decides their future, and most importantly will the Afghan people ever wake to not have to deal with a daily destruction of their lives? Dr Rangin Dafdar Spanta, ex-National Security Adviser and Foreign Minister tells SNI Associate Editor Amitabh P Revi, for real peace, the Great Game in Afghanistan must end. Dr Spanta feels when the U.S. leaves, keeping even a small American presence will ensure a bloodier situation. He is categorical that America's strategy was always wrong as it fought the symptoms and not the causes of terrorism in Pakistan. Nationalism will takeover tribalism once education reaches to youth. Young people do not want to follow their parents path. Jihad war cry is a farce and leads to sheer self-destruction. It will take long time for Afghanistan but the changes are sustainable. I like the new Afghan policy, Self interest is the key. Afghans need not address US or Pakistan interests. Also Indian interest are secondary. I like the Afghan-India relationship based on non-military resource sharing. The love of Afghan people and stability in the region is all India seeks.

Pak/Taliban have already started taking on IA & have taken over Barsmullah/Tatta Panni sector since last week. I see blood bath of IA soldiers in kashmir. Taliban are ruthless against none believers & are very passionate toward believers. Taliban fighting spirit looks absolutely backed up by divine grand scheme, because Taliban unparalleled military strategy of beating all earthly superpowers with state of the art military hardware and all their strategic war planning have become useless in last 45 years. Taliban appear to be consolidating this superb achievement & making overtures toward becoming a regional power very verh quickly.

As soon as the last US soldier leaves, India should be ready that if the Afghan Government calls for help, 10 Rashtriya Rifles batallions, 1 separate Inf Division, Army Aviation support brigade of 40+ helos and an IAF air wing with fighter & transport squadrons is ready to stay there for as long as necessary. This should be combined with development assistance and capacity development of an Afghan Border Force that effectively shuts off the border with Pakistan.
