Is the last step necessary why does it matter which way the handle faces not judging just curious is switching the handles a necessary step or was it just for looks

I can't take mine apart more than removing the handles. The middle stuck together. It's an old GEO privacy lever type, but I'm about to carefully rip apart the whole thing with a clab hammer 💥🙉💫
