In this video, Abhi and Niyu discuss the work culture in India and WHY it needs to change immediately. In this video, we dive deep into the toxic work culture that has become a harsh reality in many Indian workplaces. From excessive working hours to unrealistic expectations, the pressure to perform is taking a heavy toll on the mental and physical health of employees across industries.

One tragic example that shook many of us was the heartbreaking story of a young Chartered Accountant (CA) who recently passed away due to a heart attack caused by immense work pressure. At just 25 years old, this promising professional became a victim of the relentless grind and expectations placed upon him by the corporate system. His story is not unique—it's a reflection of a deeper issue affecting countless young professionals in India.

We also explore the signs of burnout, the importance of setting boundaries, and how both employees and employers can contribute to a healthier work environment.

Australia is about to bring a new rule called " right to disconnect" where employers will not be able to talk to employees after office hours... at least the government can bring this in India ...

I used to have a manager who was a UK national, if I would be working till 7 pm, he would ask me if your time is over, please go home, his line was "finish your work within billable hours", then I had an Indian manager soon, and the line was "I don't care for how much hours, the task needs to be finished".

I was working in a Public Sector Bank. I left the job because of long working hours and toxic work culture. It's everywhere in India.

As an Ex- EY GDS employee I can vouch for the toxic work culture. I celebrated after I left EY. It's a terrible place to work.

The govt should introduce max work hours. For example, I work with members from EY Argentina. They login at 5:30 PM IST exactly. Not a minute before. And they logout at 2:30 AM IST (9:30AM to 5:30 PM AR timezone). There is no such thing at overtime for them. If someone from India asks them to stay late, their HR will immediately escalate this. I wish we have the same work culture in India.

The concept of work-life balance in corporate environments has become a joke. My father works at the head office of West Bengal's largest school chain, where his official hours are 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM. Yet, meetings regularly drag on until 8:30, sometimes even 9:30 PM. It’s absurd that they can't fit these meetings within working hours! To make matters worse, the same points are repeated daily with no real focus on execution, leaving little time for actual work, and piling on the mental stress.

To add insult to injury, team managers often come from completely unrelated fields and end up managing teams in areas they don’t understand. Our labor laws are so weak that toxic corporate cultures like this go unchecked, and there's no accountability. This broken system desperately needs change.

During my internship, the OBG profs would sit in ac staffroom and ask us to get their food parcels to them. We would be running around in the hospital already trying to cope up with our hectic duty and they made us do delivery services as well. Previously PGs also did the same, but slowly but surely the scenario is changing. Lets all take a pledge to treat our juniors well.

Government should make a set of rules for Corporate just like US and other countries. 2weekoffs should be mandatory, sick leaves, Annual leaves. If you want to fire an employee, it should be minimum of 3 months with a proper explanation and documentation. These are minimal.

In an IT career, there is a lot of pressure. In my 10 years of IT experience, I’ve seen so many toxic managers who just offer dry promotions, giving you a title but keeping the salary low, making you work more by saying, "You're a lead now." Recently, I experienced a situation where I told my manager there was too much work on the project, and he responded by saying, "I'll transfer you to another project, then you'll realize that people there have even more work." This is no way to handle things by comparing workloads. Eight hours should be enough, but they take up 5 hours with meetings and still expect you to deliver 8 hours of work. The Indian IT culture makes people work like slaves. I have to spend two and a half hours traveling to the office every week just to say "Good morning" to the manager. Besides the 12 to 13 hours of daily work, I’m expected to train the team, take my own training, get certifications, meet quarterly goals, and still provide 40 hours of billing every week. It leads to extreme burnout.

I am from Surat and work in a diamond office. Where I have to work 10 hours every day. That too for 15 days in day and night shifts. I get only one holiday in a month. And if you take leave yourself then they immediately hire another employee. I get up at 6 in the morning. I leave home at 7. It takes 1 hour to travel 10 kilometers. All together I work for 15 to 16 hours every day.
