How Far Will The 2022 Volvo C40 Recharge Go On A full Battery? I Find Out.

Volvo's sleek and sexy C40 isn't terribly efficient for a modern EV. The result is that you'll spend more time DC charging on a road trip vs the competition and that charging will take longer...

A table comparing kWh per 100 miles (or km) would be great for you to show. Thanks!

It’s unfortunate that the energy efficiency is so bad in all of the Volvo/Polestar EVs, because they get a lot of things right in other areas. There has to be something with their motor/inverter design that is leading to the inefficiency, because it happens across the board for any of the vehicles that use it.

Love this line of cars, but the range is a non-starter for my driving habits.

Great job Alex. Please do the GV60 asap. Like tomorrow would be great. 👌

Sad to hear that it's less efficient that the 7000 lb Rivian.

Alex, are these tests standardized? Do you run all EVs with the climate in the same temp? same route? What about speed? Also, do you use different modes? (Sport, eco, normal) thanks in advance!

Weird that the Polestar 2 gets nearly 20% better range with what I assume is the same battery/motor/electronics

Did you use Range Optimizer on your trip? If so do we know how much more range you can squeeze out from doing so?

Hopefully as the electric car market matures, EFFICIENCY will be the advertised stat, not range. No ICE car is advertised based on its range. Every ICE car is advertised based on its efficiency.

On your real world loop what’s the current efficiency king and what M/KWh did it get? Thanks

Did you utilize the "range optimizer?"

I dunno. Car and Driver got 200mi out of the C40 at 75mph, and 220 miles out of a Tesla model 3 Long Range. So it gives up 10% highway range at roadtrip speeds to a Tesla Model 3? I'm good with that.

*They got the same 220mi out of a Model Y LR. As well as the Rivian R1T. It seems the Volvo loses about 10% to the competition, although I could not find a C&D test for the EV6 or Ioniq5.

As to disconnecting motors, Hyundai is having a horrible time with that in the EV6/Ioniq5, with complaints from multiple countries about motor disconnect malfunctions. Currently they are awaiting an engineering fix. This very much put me off of the Kia product as it seems this way with everything they make. GV70 3.5 had transfer case failures immediately upon delivery to the US, for example. Now disconnect failures on the EGMP twins. The engineer that went to Colorado from corporate is still in the "just replace it with another motor and see if that fixes it..." stage of diagnosing stuff.

Totally agree. Volvo’s 450hp PHEV powertrain appears much more attractive than this 400hp full electric

First! Can’t seem to locate one of those in my local dealers tho 😞

How is the efficiency so bad?! It's worse than Model Y performance with wide staggered performance tires.

RAV4 Prime easily gets 3.3 miles/kWh. Toyota really has their efficiency game down

The EV aspect of the Volvo is disappointing. I like everything else about it, but that’s a dealbreaker.
