ABRSM 2023 & 2024 - Grade 7 Piano exam - A:1 Allegro moderate ~ Joseph Haydn

Haydn composed over 60 keyboard sonatas during a 40-year period (roughly 1755-95). The Sonata in B minor is the last in a collection of six
sonatas that date from 1776. This sonata is close to Haydn's earlier Sturm und Drang (storm and stress) period in its use of a minor key and its
intense, powerful expression of emotion.

TECHNICAL CONSIDERATIONS

ABRSM’s recommended tempo for this piece is 72 bpm which is the same tempo played in this video.


Careful execution of mordents and turns is vital, as is recognition of slurs and how to play them properly. In Viennese Classical music such as this, it is particularly important to have lightness of touch at the end of slurs.. this helps to create elegance and grace, in keeping with the style of music.


The footnotes in the exam book for this piece state that the left-hand D major chord at the beginning of bars 13-15 and 55-57 might be spread out (i.e. arpeggiated) before the beat - with the top D arriving on the 1st beat of bars 13, 14 and 15 - and similarly with the top B of the B minor arpeggio from bars 55-57. This would seem only necessary for players with smaller hands who might struggle to play the whole chord at once.


Keep an eye out for various changes of clef in the left hand part and remember that the wedge shapes, such as those which appear in the left hand part of bar 1, are to be played staccatissimo - very staccato -  i.e. very detached!!
