WHAT IS ADHD:
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a condition that affects people's behaviour. People with ADHD can seem restless, may have trouble concentrating and may act on impulse.

Symptoms of ADHD tend to be noticed at an early age and may become more noticeable when a child's circumstances change, such as when they start school.

Most cases are diagnosed when children are 3 to 7 years old, but sometimes it's diagnosed later in childhood.

Sometimes ADHD was not recognised when someone was a child, and they are diagnosed later as an adult.

The symptoms of ADHD usually improve with age, but many adults who were diagnosed with the condition at a young age continue to experience problems.

People with ADHD may also have additional problems, such as sleep and anxiety disorders.

LIVING WITH ADHD:
Parents of children with ADHD
Looking after a child with ADHD can be challenging, but it's important to remember that they cannot help their behaviour.

Some day-to-day activities might be more difficult for you and your child, including:
- Getting your child to sleep at night
- Getting ready for school on time
- Listening to and carrying out instructions
- Being organised
- Social occasions
- Shopping

Adults with ADHD
Adults with ADHD may find they have problems with:
- Organisation and time management
- Following instructions
- Focusing and completing tasks
- Coping with stress
- Feeling restless or impatient
- Impulsiveness and risk taking
- Some adults may also have issues with relationships or social interaction.

ADHD DIAGNOSIS:
If you think you or your child may have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), speak to a GP.

If you're worried about your child, it may help to speak to their teachers, before seeing a GP, to find out if they have any concerns about your child's behaviour.

The GP cannot formally diagnose ADHD, but they can discuss your concerns with you and refer you for a specialist assessment, if necessary.

When you see a GP, they may ask you:

- About your symptoms or those of your child
- When these symptoms started
- Where the symptoms occur – for example, at home, in school, college or university, or at work
- Whether the symptoms affect your or your child's day-to-day life – for example, if they make socialising difficult
- If there have been any recent significant events in your or your child's life, such as a death or divorce in the family
- If there's a family history of ADHD
- About any other problems or symptoms of different health conditions you or your child may have

Wish i (or someone), would have known this growing up because i hated my childhood, and sometimes myself. It was extremely difficult to be normal. I should be pissed off, but thanks to nobody (or everybody) ive made peace with who i am, i offer no apologies, and im pretty happy and content.

I’m 27. My mother is extremely “anti- pharmaceutical”. I don’t think I ever thought that I may have Adhd until i had my heart broken at 21, which led to my business failing at 22- and ultimately shifted my entire perspective on life.

The past 5 years it has truly been next to impossible for me to focus on anything for hours, minutes, not to mention months at a time. I forget someone’s name 10 seconds after they tell me it.

I don’t know if it’s depression, bipolar, adhd, or straight up confusion. When I think about consulting a professional, I repeatedly tell myself I can sort it out with some sort of routine and tell anyone i’m in a relationship with how much I appreciate the fact that they can “put up with me” . I just don’t know what to do. The other side of me says the easy solution is to find a good stable job to provide at least an underlying level of routine and financial support.

Idk what to do

This made me quite upset. I’ve spent my life thinking I was just crap at things that most people find easy. In the 90’s no one was talking about this. We were just bad, disruptive and disobedient kids. Now I see that actually a lot of my educational life I was failed and I got pretty good at hiding all the behaviours that got me a spanking or that got me bullied. I thank God it won’t be this way for any of my kids or younger family members ❤❤❤. This Guy is also a Legend for explaining it in a way that didn’t make me want to claw my brain out through my eyes even though I did have to break three times to think lol.

Just had a mental health review, and the lady thought i might have ADHD. We did a test, and she has referred me to the ADHD service for a proper test. I would never have considered such a condition myself. But the more I research it, the more my childhood and adult life makes sense. It's too late now at 46 to turn the clock back. But it really is an, 'Ah...! Now that makes sense!!' Moment. It's no wonder life has been difficult to the point of suicidal.

3:35 I think I have 7 of these traits. I don’t have trouble organising tasks and activities, I can be fairly good at that. I don’t call it “easily distracted” I think it as “focused on the wrong thing” rather than being “distracted”. But I will call it “easily distracted” when I fail to think of another term for it.

Yes please raise awareness. Thou you didn’t mention Genetics.
Genetics and/or environmental influences are thought to be why people have ADHD.
Unaware of coming into contact with any of the environmental influences you mentioned, but like many others who suspect their child/children have ADHD, often realise symptoms within themselves or other family members throughout the wider family tree, the more they find out about this type of neurodiversity.
HowtoADHD is a great YouTube channel for more advice and ADHD community too.
Loving your channel 👍🏻

I seem to have a lot of the symptoms you listed there, in particular the attentive symptoms. Not so much the hyperactive symptoms. But a lot of people seem to mention having ADHD being like having "too much energy", and that's not like me at all. I definitely suffer with some form or another of anxiety and possibly some depression so maybe there's an overlap there somewhere, but my energy levels are typically quite low and I find it difficult to actually start a task I know I need to start, let alone finish it.

Hm, the problem is I had absence epilepsy until the age of 11 or around that time. I basically had no chance to show a lot of these sympotms and after that I sort of got to develop my personality slowly. Like this is the setting I woke up with and got used to it with the constant help and pressure and routine that my mom provided. Like I might have experienced some of the inattentive signs but it didn't harm my everyday life or anything. Now I moved out to university and feel like I just developed every single thing on both of those lists preventing me from studying adequately. But when a healthcare professional would ask me about the symptoms before 12 I wouldn't know what to tell them. Like my brain just woke up and got slowly developed after 12 and so school was not the change of setting but basically graduating and moving out and living on my own was. I don't know what to make of it
