Why Alcatraz HAD to be Closed?

At its peak period of use in the 1950s, “The Rock," or "America’s Devil Island," housed over 200 inmates at the maximum-security facility. Alcatraz remains an icon of American prisons for its harsh conditions and record for being inescapable. The twelve-acre rocky island, one and a half miles from San Francisco, featured the most advanced security of the time. Some of the first metal detectors were used at Alcatraz. Strict rules were enforced against the unfortunate inmates who had to do time at Alcatraz. Nearly complete silence was mandated at all times. Alcatraz is one of the most famous prisons to be found in the United States, even though it hasn't been open for years. This prison officially closed on March 21, 1963, after operating for more than 29 years. Over the years it built up quite a reputation for itself especially due to its location on an island making it separate from the mainland.

Hard to believe it only served as a prison for 29 years.

I had a friend who’s father worked for the corrections department. He worked at many federal prisons, including Alcatraz. The families of the staff lived on the island along with staff. They had a small school as well as a hospital. My friend’s father was assigned to Alcatraz when my friend was born, therefore my friend was born on Alcatraz

OH careful for campers on the tower!! gas closes fast so don’t get left behind

I visited Alcatraz quite a few years ago and we were allowed to walk around and explore. It was fascinating to actually see the prison.

Alcatraz closed down because of a certain warden who keeps *destroying a goddamn box!*

You would think that Alcatraz was filled with all the hard core criminals like murderers & rapists, but most were bank robbers, especially in the 20-30’s, most of the prisoners had escaped from or caused repeated problems in other prisons. Some prisoners liked it at Alcatraz cause you had your own cell & the food was really good

I've been there once on a ferry tour and everyone was able to explore freely amongst the island. It's very surreal seeing the buildings and sights I've seen so many times in movies and video games. To be there in real life is a true spectacle

there is very credible evidence that 2 of the prisoners that were deemed to have drowned did escape and made it to brazil where they lived out their lives as farmers.this came to light a few years ago. they had external help in a boat that was seen anchored in the bay that night. they actually got towed out unknowingly by the supply boat as it left at night .

Shoddy construction. Instead of importing gravel to mix with the cement, the crushed up brick as aggregate. This allowed moisture to wick into the concrete, and rust the rebar.

YT recommended me this. And honestly I still haven’t given up as this is one of my bucket lists to go! Dedicated as a CODZ fan and just love Alcatraz in general

January 2020 before the coronavirus outbreak, I flew my mom out to California for her 70th birthday and we stopped at Lake Tahoe, Muir woods, Stitton beach, Alcatraz island, Pier 39 for dinner, California state railroad museum in Sacramento and Yosemite national park. If you have never been to Alcatraz, totally worth it. The view of San Francisco is amazing and the history of the island and prison is very interesting.

Great narration, if only my history teacher from decades ago made history so interesting! You’ve got a new subscriber.

Alcatraz was on my bucket list, finally visited about 5 years ago. What an awesome tour, the headsets & labeling through the prison was excellent. It was all I expected & more. Spent 5+ hours there. 🤗🤗

It’s very odd that people who have never been in prison seem to think that old prisons are wonderful places to visit. If you have ever been locked in and heard those keys turned you know that there is nothing and nobody that will ever be able to get us to go back there

There's always this trope I've seen on my childhood that prisons are usually on an isolated, rocky island with strong currents and the inmates were the most dangerous of them all. Just realised the trope is based on Alcatraz, I guess.

I heard recently that two brothers had escaped and one had written a letter telling the authority's where he was, and wanted to go back to prison because his health was failing and he couldn't afford to take care of himself. I haven't heard anything more of that story. Just wondering if anyone else had heard anything about it? 🤔

''Hey, let's visit that one prison with 2 more friends!"
"Bet"
"Wait... what's that noise?"
"Why is round 1 above my head?"

I visited this island 20 years ago.
One if the coolest places I’ve seen. Met an old inmate there too.
