'Mission 450' For 2024 Lok Sabha Elections | Will Opposition's Patna-Plan Work? | Newshour Debate

In this episode of The Newshour Debate, host Navika Kumar will discuss how believe it or not the opposition unity meeting in Patna on June 23rd could prove to be watershed moment in Indian politics. The Patna conclave aims to unite large block of the opposition which is divided not just by ideology but also by ambition by a common desire to defeat Modi and the Bharatiya Janta party in the 2024 elections. They have faint twice in this endeavor in 2014 and in 2019 but still believe that this script will turn out to be different in 2024. Their hope hinges on what is being build as the Nitish Kumar formula. This formula proposes that the opposition block feels a joint candidate against the BJP on 450 seats to ensure there is no division of anti-BJP votes. While the formula looks great in theory for it to deliver promises will require more than arithmetic. Firstly it demands that the Congress limits it’s claim to about 200 seats. In 2019, the Congress fought on these 200 seats, in 178 of them BJP won. We are joined by a few panelists expressing their views on this issue. “Opposition fielding candidates only across the seats, where its respective parties are strong & that too over 450+ seats, is utopian. But, if that happens, it will give a terrible headache to the BJP,” stated Sanjay Jha, Author.
