This is one of my favorite jobs to do with my Porsche 911 and although it can be a little intimidating for first-timers, it's actually a very simple and straight forward job. What's more, doing it yourself can save you $200 or more at the Porsche dealer. In this video we go step-by-step through the job as well as doing a thorough inspection of the oil filter and talk about the infamous IMS BEARING and what to look out for.

I don’t recall you saying anything about running the car a few minutes to warm up the oil so it flows out more easily. I like doing that on my 996 4S.

Porsche recommend changing the filter housing periodically also, the whole kit, filter seal and housing is like £35, there is a small widget in the bottom of the housing that can become detached mine was

Awesome. Thanks. Can you post a video on a 991.2?

Hi James. Nice DIY video! Keep ‘‘em coming. Was there a reason you didn’t partially fill the oil filter housing with fresh oil? I’ve always done that to alleviate any dry start issues associated with a longer time till the oil pressure comes up.

Nice video! There's a plastic bracing skeleton @4:56 when you're disassembling the old oil filter. But... I didn't see you transfer that skeleton into the new oil filter. Did you do the transfer off camera, or does the new oil filter come with its own plastic skeleton? Supposedly the skeleton is to help prevent the paper oil filter from collapsing under pressure, which could lead to oil starvation.

James,
Which vehicle lift do you have in your garage. Thinking seriously about getting one, and yours looks to be less intrusive than some. Thanks

Did you ever do the video focused on the interior leather etc?

Yea, so you only empty it? Who do you get to put the new oil in?

996 and 997.1, filter is underneath. For 997.2 and 991.1 (at least, not sure about 991.2) the filter is on top. Newer 9A1 engine. Like the stripes. Have you ever considered bore scoping the cylinders from the sump? As handy as you are, I think it’d make good content. Not really that hard.

Are the stripes on the car Matte Black or Gloss Black?
