Getting Up Off the Floor Correctly - Ask Doctor Jo

"Help, I've fallen and I can't get up" has become a common quote to make fun of, mostly because of the over dramatic acting. However, not being able to get up off the floor can be very scary, and not as easy as people would think, especially with an injury or arthritis. This video will show you a simple way to get up off the ground without straining your body.

If you are on the ground, get on your bottom with your feet in front of you. Now pull your feet in, and slightly to one side. Once you have done this, roll over onto your feet and knees, and bring your arms forward until you are on all fours, or quadruped. Bring your "good or strong" leg forward with your knee bent into a lunge position. Finally put both hands on your good leg, and push upwards with your arms and legs.

We'll, I fell and I couldn't get up. I watched this video from down on the floor and sure enough, I was able to get up! No lie, really. Thank you so very much!

Your legs will need to be really strong for that. You can sit with your legs crossed as I am in the very beginning, and then just push up with your legs at your feet. Good luck!

Gonna try this! I am able to get up off the floor but its painful, especially in my right leg. So gonna switch the leg and use your method, hopefully it'll be easier and less painful

I have issues climbing stairs and getting up off the floor. I’m a senior but didn’t think I have these issues. I can’t even do some walking bc my legs feel weak….I was tested on my legs for blood clots and circulation, all was good.

What muscles do we strengthen to get up off the ground like we did when we were young?
I'm only 48 and getting up from the ground is a whole thing for me. It's really embarrassing. I'm changing from being a potato to being a fit person and this is a physical goal for me. : l

I was doubtful how putting both hands on the upright knee would help.
Tried it with hands free and hands on upright knee.
As you showed, it is much easier putting both hands on upright knee. Hands free left me unstable as I stood up.
I'm an old, big guy. Getting up off the floor was so much easier when I was younger.

I just tried your getting up method. I can get to the kneeling position on all fours, then I cross the hands over the extended stronger (right) leg. And then--NADA! If feels like I am having problems in all four limbs, because when I reverse the legs (weaker out in front, opposite hands on top of left knee) I still cannot budge. I am 70 and this has been getting worse lately.

I've had both knees replaced. How do I build the strength to be able to get up off the floor?

What exercise can you do that will strengthen your knee 6 months after a knee replacement so that it is easier to stand from a sitting position. Thanks so much.
